1 Early Stage Researcher
Philip Knaute Early Stage Researcher Host Institution: Schlumberger Cambridge Research (SCR) Place of Origin: Germany / Munich Appointment Time: 10 April 2010 Project: Waveform inversion and land near-surface characterization for exploration seismology Task Groups: Cooperation:

2 Past “Diplom” (equiv. to Masters) in applied mathematics at TU Munich
Numerics Mathematical Optimisation. Thesis on the usage of Neural Networks for interpolation of a blackbox function in arbitrary dimensions. Some teaching experience as tutor for mathematics for physicists and (computer)engineers.

3 Present PhD Student at Schlumberger Cambridge Research and the University of Cambridge Still working on getting all the basic seismology / physics theory right to be able to start working on my research topic

4 Future I will work on including near surface effects in full waveform inversion algorithms in exploration seismology. First I will try to develop the theory and later, applying it to data. I also will try to further improve algorithms for waveform inversion by trying to adapt methods from mathematical optimisation to seismology.

5 Thank You
