Graphing Systems of Equations
Using online graphing tools, you will graph systems of equations, and then use those graphs to determine the solution. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. Log in to Glencoe. Click on Tools. Click on eToolkit. Click on Mats, choose Coordinate Grids, then choose the last option Coordinate Grid. 5. Along the bottom on the left, there are some tools. Click on the Line Segment Tool, the fourth icon from the left. 6. In the top right corner, you will see Pen Settings. Check the box that says Point to Point. Now choose a color for your line at the bottom. Click a point on the graph to start your line, then click another point on the graph to draw your line. (This will be the first line in your system of equations.) Now choose a different color for you second line, and graph that line by clicking the points. Where do the lines cross? What is the solution to the system of equations? Take the point you chose as the solution and plug it back into each equation in the system. Does it work? This task uses: TEACHER NOTES: Graph systems using a table and coordinates or graphing in slope-intercept form - substitutes graphing on paper (you can even change the color of the line) Teacher’s name/ Leisha Lawson/ School: Vinton Middle School Louisiana State Standard: 8.EE.C.8.A Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously. Grade Level/Subject: 8th grade math Special Directions/Considerations: Students will need to be shown how to graph their lines. Some options for graphing are to either make a table with some points for the students to use to graph or to use equations in slope-intercept form. Activity Evaluation: Did students graph the system correctly? Did they choose the intersection of the graph as the solution to the system of equations? Prerequisites for students: graphing in coordinate plane, make a table of points, graphing using slope-intercept form Learning Objective(s): Students will graph systems of equations. Students will determine the solution to the system using the graph.

Self-Check Quiz You will take the self-check quiz using the online Glencoe tools. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. Open the internet and go to Enter your username and password. Click on the book to enter. Then click the menu tab at the top left and choose Resources. In the drop-down boxes, choose Chapter 3, then choose Lesson 7. Click on Check. On the right, click on Self-Check Quiz. The quiz will open in a new tab. Answer the 5 questions in the quiz and then click Check. Once you get your results, go back to the ebook or the tutorial videos to get help with any questions you missed. Then take the quiz again. Raise your hand when you answer all 5 questions correctly. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Write a system of equations based on given information. Determine the solution to a system of equations based on the graph. TEACHER NOTES: This augments a traditional paper quiz/exit ticket, but adds functionality because students immediately get their score (instant feedback); there is also a hint button for students that are having trouble. Teacher’s name/ Leisha Lawson/ School: Vinton Middle School Louisiana State Standard: 8.EE.C.8.A Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously. Grade Level/Subject: 8th grade math Special Directions/Considerations: You can use the self-check quiz with any lesson in multiple ways. Each time students open the quiz, they get new questions, so this can be used more than once. This gives students more practice problems on the same skills. Activity Evaluation: Score on quiz Prerequisites for students: systems of equations, writing equations from word problems

Systems Wiki Web Page Create a web page using Wiki tools in Blackboard. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. Log in to Blackboard. Then click on Middle School Mathematics under My Organizations. On the left, click the IMPACT 2015 button. Click on the assignment Systems Wiki. Choose two-real world situations that are similar to represent a system of equations. For example, compare the costs of two cell phone plans based on how many minutes you talk. You can use the internet to research real information from real companies about the situation that you chose. When you are ready to begin your Wiki (webpage), click on Systems Wikis, then Create Wiki. The name of the Wiki will be real world situation such as Comparison of Cell Phone Plans. In the content box, you will provide the following: a written description of the situation that you chose. the system of equations that represent that situation and the graph of that system. graph the system of equations using the Glencoe tools or using Excel. write the solution to the system and include a written description of what the solution means in the situation. 6. After you have finished your Wiki, you will review a different Wiki and comment on the problem that they have presented. You will also comment on the accuracy of their solution. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Write and solve a system of equations based on real world information. Interpret the solution within the context of the situation. TEACHER NOTES: This represents modification because technology allows students to create their own webpage and add information about their situation. This also relates to real-world jobs as technology floods the job market. Grade Level/Subject: 8th grade math Special Directions/Considerations: Students may need help graphing the equations using technology. You may want to give a mini-lesson on how to graph using Excel or the Glencoe tools. Activity Evaluation: Is the system of equations correct? Did they graph the system correctly? Did they interpret the solution correctly? Prerequisites for students: graphing equations, writing equations given a situation

Systems Comic Strip Create a comic strip that describes a system of equations and how to solve it algebraically and graphically. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. Each group has been given two real-world situations that are being compared with one another. You will be creating a comic strip that explains the steps of writing, solving, and interpreting the solution to that system of equations. On the iPad, click the Comic Life app. Then choose new comic. Choose a blank template or a ready-made template. If you choose to use a blank template, you can use the tools at the top right to select a background color, the layout of the page, and other characteristics for your comic strip. For each tile in the comic strip, you can add a picture as well as text bubbles. You will need to include the following components in your comic strip: write out your system of equations show each step of how to solve the system algebraically include the graph of the system explain/interpret the solution to the system of equations You can do all of this on your paper and take pictures of each step. You will use the text bubbles to caption what you are doing in each step of the process. You can use different types of text bubbles to help you explain the process. Get creative and make it interesting! Optional: upload the comic strip to Educreations and add your own audio. Then you can share your comic strip with students in other schools to receive feedback. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Write a system of equations. TEACHER NOTES: This represents redefinition because it would be very difficult to produce without the use of technology. It will be very engaging to all students and will allow them to show their true level of understanding. You could take it one step further by sharing the comic strips with students in other schools.
