The North The aurora borealis, or northern lights, is a colorful band of light that can be seen in the Northern Hemisphere The further north you go the better you can see it Scientists believe charged particles of the Sun hit our Earth’s atmosphere and create this “light show”

The Far North This area represents 1/3 of all of Canada
Only 1% of their population lives here Mostly indigenous peoples Northwest Territories 50% indigenous Nunavut 85% indigenous Yukon 14% indigenous, and the rest is European or other ancestry Contact with Europeans has changed indigenous lifeway's

Government In the Canadian Parliament the House of Commons represents both the provinces and territories However, each territory has its own legislative, lawmaking, body similar to those of the provinces The territorial governments have some control over things like education and local concerns However, the federal government in Ottawa has much more control on things like taxes and natural resources in the territories

In 1896 gold was discovered in the Klondike Gold Rush The town of Dawson swelled to 30,000 people! In 1898 Parliament voted to make the Yukon its own territory People risked their lives to get there through “the meanest 32 miles in the world” or the Chilkoot Pass The gold rush ended as quickly as it began Today only 1300 people live in Dawson

The Inuit proposed the creation of their own territory in the 1970’s The Inuit speak a language called Inuktitut The capital of Nunavut is Iqaluit and provided jobs at the time it was built The economy of this area struggles because it is so remote and cold Modern conveniences like the Internet, television, and cell service now exist
