1 Heart Attack By: Taylor

2 What is a heart attack? A sudden and sometimes fatal occurrence of the coronary thrombosis that typically results in the death part of a muscle. It happens when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a section of the heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked and the heart can’t get oxygen.

3 Symptoms Men: Women: Chest Pain or discomfort Chest Pain or discomfort
Upper body discomfort Shortness of breath Breaking out in a cold sweat Nausea Light headedness or sudden dizziness Women: Chest Pain or discomfort Pain in your arms, back, neck or jaw Stomach Pain Fatigue Shortness of breath Sweating

4 Tests to Diagnose a Heart Attack
EKG- can tell how much damage has occurred to your heart Blood Test- to measure the levels of cardiac enzymes that indicate heart muscle damage Echocardiography- to see how the heart is pumping Cardiac Catheterization- if symptoms are not relieving, it can be used to directly visualize the blocked artery and help your doctor determine which procedure is needed to treat the blockage. Tests to Diagnose a Heart Attack

5 Causes & Risk Factors results when a blood clot completely obstructs a coronary artery supplying blood to the heart muscle and heart muscle cells die. Atherosclerosis (gradual process by which plaques of cholesterol are deposited in the walls of arteries) smoking high blood pressure obesity high cholesterol inactive lifestyle and poor diet diabetes unmanaged stress 10 mins 30 mins

6 Ways to prevent a heart attack
Stop smoking. Start exercising. Change your diet by adding more raw fruit & vegetables. Maintain/lose weight. Control blood pressure. Avoid foods containing trans fat Control cholesterol Monitor blood sugar. Limit alcohol intake.

7 Treatment ~ Beta Blockers - Drugs that helps manage Cardiac Arrhythmias, which also protects the heart from the second heart attack ~ ACE Inhibitors - Pharmaceutical drug used primarily for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure ~ Thrombolytic Therapy - Drugs used to break up or dissolve blood clots

8 Treatment…Continued Certain treatments are started right away if heart attack is suspected, even before the diagnosis is confirmed. Which include: Aspirin is given to reduce further blood clotting Oxygen therapy Treat any chest pains

9 Heart Attack Facts “Researchers found that a woman’s resting pulse rate was a good indicator of her risk of heart attack. Women with high heart rates, at or above 76 beats per minute, were more likely to suffer a heart attack than women with lower resting pulse rates.” “Two-thirds of deaths from heart attacks in women occur in those who have had no history of chest pain.” “Laughing relaxes and expands blood vessels, which helps protect the heart.”

10 What happens during a heart attack?

11 Quiz What is a sign of a heart attack in women?
