Exercise : 3 minutes If you were given a chance to build a brand new research library from the scratch - today, what will you do differently in Collections Development? If you were given a chance to build a University library, collections and services – what do you do? How do you give birth to a brand new library? Do you try to produce the best baby or another baby? PLEASE DISCUSS TO THE PERSON NEXT TO YOU – 1 minute PLEASE SHARE ONE IMPORTANT THING TO THE AUDIENCE – 2 minutes

Collection Development All Print Vs Selections
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Collection Development All Print Vs Selections 2009 Library Opens (with huge online collection) Buy and keep more print items too Build comprehensive S&T collection Add print books 10,000 per year Selection Tools: Choice Review, YBP Gobi, RCLWeb Assumptions: Best S&T Library needs all relevant print books From 2011 Print copy Orders only recommended titles Demand based Print collection No more shelves will be added Add titles, at least one person has recommended Shift collection building from the Librarians to Patrons (no selection Tools) Weeding policy and procedures in 2015 Right Physical Sizing from early years Evidence: 20% of the books account for 80% of the use (Richard Trueswell, 1969 ) © aei.org Though we have started with a huge online collection and digital archives, the intial plan was to have more print books as well. In 2011, we decided to fully shift to e-direction, with very limited print collection on demand. Right Physical Sizing, which many established libraries are trying now through shared storage etc, wont be an issue for us in the future.

Collection Development e-only
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Collection Development e-only New environment Researcher needs anytime – anywhere Shift from whole book to chapter level Ebooks were booming “With USD 60,000 we can have all of the words in the Library of Congress books collection digitized (26 Million volumes). When a book is about one megabyte, 26 million megabytes is 26 terabytes. Brewster Karhle, Internet Archive (TED talk 2007) Digital natives Better Use of library space Started practicing e-only policy No print journals from the starting No print theses & Dissertations from the starting Patron Recommendations will buy print, if they are not available as ebook, or there is a specific need to have it as Print. I don’t need to explain the young researchers digital preference and the availability of all resources in online. It is to be noted when Brewster told this, realise how the technology is cheap. We buy print copies, if it is recommended only.

Collection Development All back volumes & Archives: Digital only
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Collection Development All back volumes & Archives: Digital only Archives and back volumes all are online, gives us much more freedom in organizing and also in space.

Collection Development Patron Driven Experiments
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Collection Development Patron Driven Experiments CUP Experiment Best if buying lots of titles Deal directly with the publisher Access to more content Negotiate Better license terms Better discounts Streamlines purchase process Aimed at shifting e-book purchases based on actual usage and requests instead of “that someone, somewhere, someday, will want to use it”. Technological and DRM barriers Cost-per-title savings Vs. e-book bundles Decoupling of chapters from e-books PDA or DDA models are aimed at building meaningful collection based evidences of demand. It was started by book vendors or aggregators and when we analysed different licenses, all of them were about barriers – you cant do this, you cant do that etc etc. AT KAUST we prefer seamless access to resources and campus wide. Other drawback of those models were, you pay more when the usage increases, same multiple copy model of the print books. We started contacting the Publishers directly, where they were thing of not using this option. Camebridge University Press collaborated with us to experiment the first Publisher offered PDA with us. Then Wiley was also offered this option. We have used the usage of their products, to analyse the final cost – then compared with their huge discount and purchased the full package. Tyhurst and Vijayakumar, 2015

Direct Publisher Relations
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Direct Publisher Relations Founding collections purchased through local vendors Since 2011 all relations are direct with Publishers – much close and stronger Annual direct-meetings at Frankfurt Book Fair and other places Visits and meetings Found very useful in-terms of Better understanding Better negotiations Speedy resolution of issues Partnership

Collection Development No Policies Yet: WHY?
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Collection Development No Policies Yet: WHY? Key Issues for E-Resource Collection Development (IFLA, 2012) focuses on key aspects of the e-resource process in libraries. doesn’t cover acquisition, delivery and access management, promotion of resources, reading device, user training and support etc. Traditional criteria, subject, level, target audience still apply. The supplementary policy addresses: Technical feasibility Functionality & reliability Vendor support Supply Licensing (SERU - Shared E resource Understanding) The eresources dimension requires the library to continually rethink the collections strengths and future directions to accommodate the needs of the user community. Shaw, 2012 Buck and Vijayakumar, 2016

Collection Development No Policies Yet: WHY?
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Collection Development No Policies Yet: WHY? Direction Not possible to ‘adapt’ a print CPD to an E-resource collection, which is a highly complex technical document which has to evolve and be updated. Our forthcoming CPD policy will focus in detail on our e-resource collections Ongoing gathering of usage statistics and assessment will inform the currency, usefulness and value of the collection to our user community in line with our library vision, mission and values, and the overall vision and mission of KAUST Issues arising Separate print budget is legacy from print Interdisciplinary in KAUST and Bundles needs fluid policy. Review and renewal process Usage data Changes to information provider Operating platform Access provision Pricing Access to backfiles License Packaging/content available Buck and Vijayakumar, 2016

Open Access & Collections
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Open Access & Collections Negotiating subscription licenses with all Publishers to include Off-set models terms Green OA deposit terms Common challenge for all of us from academic libraries. How many times we have to spend for research and scholarly communication? How do we show library’s identity in research funding savings also in subscription budget? As the leader of OA initiatives in the region with first OA mandate, we are trying to do things differently. Tamarkin and Vijayakumar, 2016

Lessons learned E-Only Collections are easy to handle
CLSTL 2017, IIT Gandhi Nagar, India Lessons learned E-Only Collections are easy to handle E-Only collections need more organization and continued trouble shoots Bundles are economical than selected titles (e-books and e-journals) PDA models are economical for collections from non-core subjects Publisher direct PDA models are much better than aggregator models Better analysis is important to demonstrate the value of the collections & services Negotiating Licensing and Pricing terms require in-depth knowledge of resources, community needs and research focus Most Importantly – FOCUS ON OUR USERS Its not just SURVIVAL – its more about BEING SUSTAINABLE & STAYING RELEVANT
