1 Giant metallic structures
Describe the difference between the structures of diamond and graphite. Explain the different properties of these versions of carbon. Graphite Diamond

2 Learning questions What general properties do metals have?
Do all metals have these properties? Why do metals have these properties? How are metals held together in a bond?

3 What properties do metals have?
What do we use metals for? Do all metals do the same job? Give some examples.

4 Comparing properties You will be investigating some properties of metals and deciding how similar/different they are. Make sure you make note of your observations. Instructions are found in folder, could share with the students. Metal Magnetic Melting point (high/low) Conducts heat? Electrical conductor? Malleable? (Change shape) Reacts with water?

5 Explaining the properties
How are metals held together? Its structure affects all of the properties you see in metals.

6 Metallic bonding to explain properties
We can use what we know about metallic bonding to explain: Why metals have a high melting point. Why metals conduct electricity. Why metals conduct heat. How metals are malleable. Use your diagram and the internet to help explain why metals have these properties.

7 Properties explained High melting point is due to the strong attraction between metal ions and free electrons. Conductivity due to the electrons ability to move quickly and pass on the energy.

8 metals are very malleable, they can be readily bent, pressed or hammered into shape. The layers of atoms can slide over each other without fracturing the structure The reason for this is the mobility of the electrons.

9 Alloys What is an alloy? An alloy is a mixture of a metal with another element. This affects the properties,(like make it harder) of the material by changing the structure. How might it do this? Hint: look at the change to the structure

10 Using bonding to explain properties
Use the keywords to describe the bonding and properties of the following molecules: Carbon dioxide (CO2) Sodium chloride (NaCl) Iron (Fe) (9 marks) Key terms: Metallic bonding; Giant covalent structure; Ionic lattice; Simple covalent molecule. Weak forces of attraction; strong attraction; high melting point; low melting point; conducts electricity; doesn’t conduct electricity; free electrons; malleable

11 Is copper magnetic? Why does this happen?
