CMS RPC system RPC present system Covers 0 < |h | < 1.6
1056 chambers 110,000 electronic channels and 3500 m2 of active area Double gaps gas chamber: 2 mm gas width Bakelite bulk resistivity: r = x 1010 cm Strip width: 1 − 4 cm. Gas mixture: C2H2F4 + isoC4H10 + SF6 (40% of H) 95.2% % % Operated in avalanche mode 4th station installed in RPC upgrade: Installation of improved RPC in the RE4-1 and RE3-1 stations 72 chambers in total (1/2 of RE4-2/3 project) Roma 09/09/16

CMS RPC: operations RPC successfully participated in all LHC collision Runs All lumi sections (LS) have been marked as good (a part for LS during first two RPC calibration runs) No down time assigned to RPCs Fraction of active channels: 98.3% RPC trigger: Overlap region: RPC hits included and triggering Barrel region: RPC hits included in the firmware RPC BX used RPC only trigger under validation Leaks under observation: 43 leaky chambers (intervention during EYTS are man power expansive) Roma 09/09/16

HPL vs glass Low-resistivity glass: material and supplier (Tsinghua U.) new to CMS; tunable resistivity,1010Ωcm (or lower) achieved; no oiling procedure needed; no humidification of gas mixture; limited sizes only HPL/bakelite: material and supplier (Puricelli, General Tecnica, INFN) known to CMS; present system 1-5x1010Ωcm, but 0.5-1x1010Ωcm may be achievable; typical CMS sizes are no problem 1.6mm double-gap HPL RPC, GIF++ max. γ rate at the test position ~ 1.5 kHz cm-2 150 GeV π,μ SPS, H2 (Jun. 2015) Rate capability established with small beam spot, for low-resist. glass chambers (single-gap !) Rate capability established > 1.5 kHz cm-2, for both HPL and low resist. glass RPC riunione CMS Italia - 6/07/16

Front-end electronics
Present CMS RPC endcap front-end board has important draw-backs: it’s old in terms of design and components, difficult to reproduce 32 channels only in present layout (4x 8ch. ASIC) connection to strips via coaxial cables noisier compared to newer SiGe technology LVDS out LVDS out LV, I2C strips strips Baseline solution includes new front-end electronics, lower noise level, higher sensitivity, higher granularity HARDROC2 chip under study: 3 shapers 3 discriminators low power consumption Possibility to include TDC R&D ATLAS_CMS in corso anche nell’INFN Lyon group riunione CMS Italia - 6/07/16

Consolidation of present
system Link board system produced in 2006 Optical signal from GOL 1.6 Gbps (slow for modern receivers and FPGA) Big number of optical links CB and LB firmware frozen since 4 years No firmware developers Poland group not interested to maintain it for Phase 2 LB issue Plans to replace it in part or totally LB historically included in trigger project Different options under scrutiny Roma 09/09/16
