Circles Vocabulary
2
NAMING A CIRCLE USE THE CENTER NAME WITH A SMALL CIRCLE AROUND IT.
3
Circle Circle – The set of all points in a plane at a given distance from a given point (the center of the circle) in the plane
4
Radius Radius – A segment from a point on a circle or a sphere to the center
5
Congruent Circles Congruent Circles – Circles with the same radius
6
Concentric Circles Concentric Circles – Circles that lie in the same plane that share the same center
7
Circumference Circumference – The distance around a circle, that is, the perimeter
8
Arc Arc – Two points on a circle and the continuous (unbroken) part of the circle between the two points
9
Arc Length Arc Length – The fraction of the circumference of a circle defined by the arc
10
Semicircle Semicircle – An arc of a circle whose endpoints are the endpoints of a diameter
11
Minor Arc Minor Arc – An arc of a circle whose length is less than the length of a semicircle of the circle
12
Major Arc Major Arc – An arc of a circle whose length is greater than the length of a semicircle of the circle
13
Chord Chord – A segment whose endpoints lie on a circle
14
Diameter Diameter – A chord that contains the center of the circle
15
Secant Secant – A line that contains a chord
16
Tangent Line Tangent Line – A line that lies in the plane of a circle and that intersects the circle at exactly one point (point of tangency)
17
Inscribed Angle Inscribed Angle – An angle whose vertex lies on a circle and whose sides contain chords of the circle
18
Central Angle Central Angle – An angle whose vertex is the center of a circle and whose sides contain radii of the circle
19
