All informally recognise Reach at each other and offer variety of support / guidance for pupils applying to professions, runing sessions in school &/or campus.

WA opportunity for 96 partner / target schools across 12 Local Authorities
over 4,000 S4 – S6 school pupils taking part in WP activity during 13/14

Reach in the WoS = 96 schools with < 35% progression to HE
Try to take a wide and long term view, integrate activity, establish productive partnerships, collaborate, be focused & flexible!
Programme partnership is based on school progression rate, some schools take part in all, others just one:
Top Up (<25% HE Progression) – 2000+, S5 & S6
SS (<27% HE Progression) – c. 200, S5 & S6
Taster Weeks (regional rather than HEP focus) - c. 200 in total, 3 weeks (two GCC, 1 D&G), S4 & S5
APE (<35% HE Progression) – c.50, S5 – S6
Reach (<35% HE Progression) – c.2000, S4 – S6

An idea of scale and scope - rural and urban locations with a multitude of schools types
The geography of the situation determined a lot of the structure of the programme and how it is delivered - schools are clustered by geographical location and numbers of pupils.
PG Tutor teams can deliver in-person /school or online

- Rather than us contacting 96 schools (26% of total schools in Scotland), the 12 LA’s helped to establish links and appropriate contacts within the schools themselves.

Lecture and topical case study tutorial with staff and current students
We work with pupils from S4 to provide an early enough intervention to have an impact, providing guidance to pupils due to the exacting and demanding nature of the application process for professional subjects.
Clustered by location – depending on number of pupils, may be more than 1 school per session (hosted by 1 school with others visiting)
Remote locations of schools has prompted us to develop online sessions so we can deliver programme content to every school within our remit.

S5 assignment is assessed and introduces pupils to academic conventions helping to prepare them for university life.
Campus Week assessment follows on from school sessions
Vet school week in S5 particularly engaging and consistently rates highest in pupil feedback
S6 interview workshops on campus

Advice and support on gaining relevant work experience
Guidance on school subject choice
Admissions agreements
Pupils build up a Reach profile based on their completion of the assessed elements of the course and this can be used towards admission to the University of Glasgow and other HE partners.
Workshops with teachers
We can help find or put pupils in contact with work experience since this is often an issue for these pupils
Admission agreements mean that grade tariffs and/or UKCAT scores can be adjusted based on successful completion of Reach - participation is considered in the decision making process.

Aim is to increase entrants from target schools across the 4 disciplines to then gradually increase the numbers from MD postcode areas
All pupils in target schools eligible to attend, data starts at since they were the first group of Reach pupils to go through the entire programme, from s4-s6.
Progress in all areas, especially when consider that entrants dropped significantly in 2010/11 (after the baseline):

Dentistry 15.3% (9.5)
Vet Medicine 10.2% (4.5)
Law 13.2% (25)
A small change in numbers can make a big difference in % and still progress to be made, esp in Vet & Law.
