Welcome Bienvenue Bienvenido To P3/4 Miss Toner

2 Literacy This year the children will be looking at a variety of resources such as class novels and non fiction passages. They will be learning to develop and extend their reading for understanding skills.

3 Reading for Understanding Strategies
The children will develop strategies to help extend their comprehension skills . Before reading strategies: Predicting- Children predict what a text is about or what may happen next in a chapter of a story Connecting- children find connections to self, another text and the wider world e.g P1 ‘Hungry Caterpillar’- To self - I eat lots of food and that makes me bigger and stronger, -to wider world- caterpillars change into cocoons and become butterflies

4 Self questioning- e.g. the children are given a question mat and have to create high order thinking questions about the book E.g. The Magic Finger- What powers does the main character have? What do they use these powers for? Skimming-to establish the main idea of the story During Reading Strategies: Connecting- as before Comparing-characters, themes, plot and facts Predicting- as before Visualising-Children asked to create visual representation of the text, sensory chart-what do they see, hear, feel about the characters. Self questioning- as before

5 After Reading Strategies:
Inferring- The children discuss a main event or character in a story to discover the different opinions, thoughts or feelings which have arisen from what has been implied in the story. Synthesising - e.g. I would say to the children ‘The BFG is not a stereotypical giant.’ The children decide their viewpoint come up with evidence to support this from the text. Scanning- To train the children to scan a text to find specific information. Determining importance/ summarising- e.g. children decide the 6 most important events from a story/chapter

6 VCOP- ‘Big Writing’ V- ambitious vocabulary (similes, metaphors, adjective phrases) C- a variety of connectives (nevertheless. Moreover, despite this, in addition to, also) O- Openers- a wide variety, e.g. Words ending in ly, ed or ing. P- Punctuation- accurate , full stops, capital letters and commas are essential. Children will experiment with more sophisticated punctuation e.g brackets, ellipsis, colons, apostrophes etc.

7 Numeracy and Maths Over the course of the year the children will explore a range of topics. This term they will be looking at: Number work – addition and subtraction up to 1000 and multiplication and division Money – linking number work with money (providing a real life context for learning) Constant reinforcement of multiplication tables at home would be useful – revising 2, 5 and 10 times table and developing knowledge and speed of 3, 6, and 9 times tables

8 ‘Big Maths’- ‘CLIC’ Weekly mental maths focus, children get a ‘Big Maths Beat That’ test on a Friday. C- Counting L- Learn its I-It’s nothing new C-Calculating Number talks- children sharing strategies in maths and learning from each other.

9 Modern Languages The pupils will be learning French and Spanish this year. The topics covered will include: Numbers to 40 Asking and saying how you are Introducing yourself Asking and saying what age you are

10 RE Children will continue to participate in Christian meditation
The children will continue to learn about stories from the Old and New Testament as well as other world religions as they develop as a community of faith and learning

11 Science This term the children will be learning about static electricity and electrical circuits and developing scientific skills such as predicting, analysing, evaluating and data handling which will also build on key numeracy and literacy skills.

12 Homework Homework will be given on a weekly basis. Children will be given homework on a Monday which will be set for Monday- Thursday every week and usually will include: spelling, maths, topic, science , RE or grammar. Please ensure children use active strategies to learn rules each week. Spelling city online is a great way to do this. Thursday night homework will always be a family learning task. Written homework should therefore be handed in on Thursday mornings as the family learning task will not require jotters.

13 Learning Journeys The children set 3 achievable targets in Maths, Health and Wellbeing and Literacy at the beginning of each term. These targets will be reflected on at the end of the term.
