Wednesday, may 11th On your bellringer paper, answer the following questions using the map to the right: 1.What is the majority religion in China? 2. In which country is the Shinto religion practiced? 3. Why might a part of East Asia be mainly Muslim?

The word Shinto describes the traditional beliefs, rituals, and religion of indigenous Japan. The word came into use to distinguish the traditional Japanese culture from the one that had been created by the Chinese introduction of Buddhism in 552. Shinto has no traditional texts or founder but grew from the ancient beliefs and practices of the Japanese people. Eventually the belief developed that the imperial family of Japan was of divine origin. Chinese Confucianism and Taoism also influenced Shinto. Shinto means “the way of kami,” which translates loosely as "the mystical, divine, or sacred way." At the center of Shinto practice is attention to the kami, or spirits, not God or gods, who are concerned with human happiness. Prayers and offerings at shrines are believed to help people to communicate with kami. Shinto beliefs also include reverence of ancestors, much like the Confucian beliefs of China. It is not unusual for individual Japanese to have shrines at home. Shinto remains a strong influence on Japanese values and attitudes.

Today… Our essential question is: How does a country meet the challenges created by a large and growing population? Think-aloud: With your table group, choose one of the scenarios below. Discuss the costs/benefits to these and come up with at least two for each. Someone at your table should write down at least two costs and two benefits. Getting a pet Not having a summer break but having shorter school days Having phones at school

After looking at these, lets list some things that might be in short supply.
With your table, come up with ideas of things that might be hard to come by. Have someone from your table write it here on the board. If yours is taken, come up with another one before the timer runs out.
