What is ALCOSAN? Located along the Ohio River on Pittsburgh’s North Side We provide wastewater treatment services to 83 communities including the city of Pittsburgh Up to 250 million gallons of storm and wastewater are processed daily from homes, businesses and industries

What is the Scholastic Outreach and Education Department?
Scholastic Outreach & Education provides educational services and activities within 83 communities We are administrators and certified teachers with a variety of professional and academic backgrounds We offer activities during and after school, summer programs and special events for students and community organizations as well as professional development for educators

What is the program’s goal?
To provide fun, engaging activities for educators, students and the community that teach about: ALCOSAN Wastewater treatment process Environmental leadership STEM-related subjects and skilled trade careers (HVAC, welding, electrical, plumbing, etc.)

Who are our audiences? We are training students to become environmental stewards of our waterways. Parents, teachers, homeowners and ALCOSAN all can work together for clean water.

Classroom Outreach For students in pre K– 12
We conduct in class presentations about ALCOSAN, waste and water, pollution and more Complete an outreach request form Choose from a number of hands-on activities focused on the environment, STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) and pre-K lessons All supplies and materials required to complete the activities are provided Requires additional site staff assistance All at NO COST to you

General Outreach Community Events (Tabling) Back-to-school nights
Open Houses Resource and science fairs (if requested, as judges) Local community engagement in our service area ***To have a Scholastic Outreach representative attend your event, an outreach request must be submitted***

Storm Drain Stenciling
A popular way to prevent pollution Slogan: “Dump No Waste-Drains to River” Facilitated by an adult team leader Ideal for school-based projects and environmental clubs, scouting organizations and community service projects **Training and stenciling materials are provided at no cost. The program runs from March through October, weather permitting**

Afterschool Outreach Workforce and Vocational Exploration (WAVE)
For students in grades 9 -12 Meets once a week from October – May Learn about the unions and skilled trade professions at ALCOSAN Exposure to STEM careers Academic enrichment, career and soft skills acquisition Features: Hands-on Saturdays workshop series

Summer Programs Summer Science Camp
Hands-on environmental science activities, biodiversity and maintaining a healthy watershed Each camp is one week long and for students in grades 4 – 8 Held at ALCOSAN’s treatment facility on Pittsburgh’s North Side Online registration begins in February

Summer Programs Clean Water Academy
A weeklong STEM enrichment program in partnership with local universities For students currently in grades 9-10 Students tour ALCOSAN and the onsite laboratory and cover topics like engineering, chemistry, microbiology and technology. Online registration begins in February

Internship Program An excellent way for college and high school students in grades to gain valuable exposure to various careers and in the wastewater industry Provides an inside, hands-on exploration of the trades, specialized jobs and interaction with skilled professionals Applications are accepted on a rolling bases and internships are unpaid

Teacher Workshops Science and Environmental Education Advisory Collaborative (S.E.E.A.C.) The Science and Environmental Education Advisory Collaborative is a STEM-based, professional development workshop series designed for formal and informal educators. Educators network and share best practices to inform Scholastic activities and programs Engaging activities, classroom resources and guest speakers Online registration opens in August Earn FREE ACT 48 credits
