Exodus – An Overview 2nd Book of the Bible Chronicles life in Egypt after Joseph Contains 4 main sections Bondage in Egypt A deliverer (Moses) Deliverance Worship (Law/Tabernacle/Priesthood) Contains the first instances of two major ideas: Redemption – (Pâdâh ~ to redeem, ransom) Salvation –(Yeshûwâh ~ deliverance, salvation)

Exodus – An Overview Historical Background Foreign Pharaoh’s reigned during Joseph’s time. The new Pharaoh of the Exodus was a rightful Egyptian Pharaoh. Cultural Background Israel had been in Egypt around 430yrs Only the last 130 yrs had been in slavery (4-5 Generations)

Midwives refused and Israel continues to flourish. Pharaoh gives the order to throw all newborn males into the river. Moses Born (Exodus 2) Of Levite descent. Moses hidden by his mother. Baby Moses in the basket.

The Life of Moses Moses in Midian (Exodus 2 – 3) Moses chooses Israel over Egypt (40yrs old). Kills an Egyptian abusing an Israelite. Flees to Midian. Meets Midianite Shepherds. Marries Zipporah. Fathers Gershom and Eliezer. King of Egypt dies. God Remembers His Covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. (Exodus 2:24-25)

The Life of Moses The Burning Bush (Exodus 3-4) On Mt. Horeb God appears to Moses (80yrs old) A bush that burned but was not consumed. When Moses looked, God called for him. (Exodus 3:4) God calls Moses to lead His people. God gives Moses His name; I AM THAT I AM. (Exodus 3:14) God instructs Moses. What to say What to do What to expect

God Attacks the Faith of Egypt The 10 Plagues of Egypt (Exodus 5-12) The waters turned to blood. God shows His power is greater than the patron goddess of Egypt, the Nile. (Also could be Khnum, the guardian of the Nile) The plague of frogs. God shows His power over the Egyptian god, Heqet.

God Attacks the Faith of Egypt The plague of gnats/lice. God shows His power over Geb, the “great god of the earth.” The plagues of flies, livestock, boils, hail and locusts. God shows His power over the many, many Egyptian gods of nature. The plague of darkness. God shows His power over Ra, the sun god. The plague on the firstborn. God shows His power over man and their society.
