2. When and Where?
See the handout “GEOL344 Orientation and Safety 2017”. If you want to take GEOL344 you must complete and return this form by November 25th 2016.
Students will be told if they have been accepted into GEOL344 (by ) by December 9th 2016 at the latest.

Stereographic projection techniques.
Making and recording structural measurements.
Up-scaling field structural data to generate reasonable geometric and kinematic models.
Collecting sedimentological data.
Process and environmental interpretations of sediments.
Generating basin stratigraphy and palaeogeographic models.

Designing a mapping programme
Geological reconnaisance
Reading the landscape
Location methods
Making a well constrained field slip
Cross section construction
Generating a generalised vertical stratigraphy (GVS).

9. How will you be assessed?
Work collected from the field.
One to one (with a demonstrator) tests of proficiency whilst in the field.
Work completed in the evening based on fieldwork from the day.
A final map (Swinburn) collated after return to Dunedin.

A clipboard from a shop will not do- it’s not rigid enough. Map board could be like Dave’s- or here are some other ideas. Most maps will be A4 in size so make board bigger than A4. Some people like A3 boards. They do catch the wind a lot!!!

*modern high quality fibre tip pens (~$5 to $10 per pen) such as the one shown are sufficient. True technical pens (Rotring Rapidograph, Staedtler Mars Matic etc) are very expensive ($50 per pen) – you don’t need the expensive ones.
