According to MTU: Customize your degree with focus areas available in:
Mechanical engineers apply the principles of motion, energy, force, and materials to design products that are safe, efficient, reliable, and cost effective. Learn to design components, devices, systems, and processes that will help solve today’s biggest challenges in health care, transportation, climate change, and more, while working in industries such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical, communications, nanotechnology, and power-generation industries. Customize your degree with focus areas available in: Agile interconnected microgrids Design and dynamic systems Energy thermo-fluids Manufacturing/industrial Solid mechanics You can also focus your interests in a research group such as Advanced power systems Engineering education innovation Mechanics of multi-scale materials Multi-scale sensors and systems Space Systems Minors are available in Aerospace Engineering Manufacturing

According to WMU: Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Mechanical engineers plan and design machines, tools, engines, and other equipment or systems that produce or use power. They design products such as instruments, controls, engines and machines as well as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic and heat transfer systems. They plan and direct fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment in addition to developing methods and procedures for testing products and services. Mechanical engineers direct and coordinate construction and installation activities to ensure conformance with engineering design and customer specifications. They coordinate operation, maintenance and repair activities to get the best use of machines and systems. Mechanical engineers may also evaluate field installations and recommend design changes to eliminate malfunctions. After you graduate Recent WMU graduates with degrees in mechanical engineering are working in a variety of industries, including: Architectural design Construction Manufacturing Communications

According to MIT Undergraduate Programs in Mechanical Engineering
Our undergraduate programs combine a broad-based education in the engineering sciences with a strong grounding in quantitative, problem-solving, design, and communications skills. By emphasizing both analytical and creative methods, MechE degree programs give students the broad skill set they need to pursue their goals – whether that’s working as an engineer, founding a company, continuing on to graduate study and research, or going to a professional school to study medicine, business, or law. Three courses (paths) to choose: Course 2, 2A, 2OE

WMU says, The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers a combination of coursework, laboratory and design experiences to prepare you for a career in mechanical or aerospace engineering. Our programs offer students diverse and multidimensional education that addresses fundamental understanding of the underlying mathematics, sciences, and engineering, design methodologies, use of modern simulation and design tools and extensive laboratories for undergraduate and graduate instruction and research. We offer programs leading to a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy in engineering (mechanical), and a Bachelor of Science, and Master of Science in engineering (aerospace). Mechanical and aerospace engineering is a dynamic and continually evolving profession. Mechanical engineers design, build and maintain the products and processes that define industrial and post-industrial societies.

UofM Dearborn says Chair's Message
Welcome to the website of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. One of five departments in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Department of Mechanical Engineering offers the degrees of Bachelor and Master of Science in Engineering (BSE/MSE) in Mechanical Engineering and the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) in Bioengineering. Its 20 full-time faculty members teach and engage in research on solid mechanics, dynamics and control, materials and manufacturing, nano- and biotechnology, and thermal/fluids science. Our faculty are also dissertaion advisors for the Ph.D. program in Automotive Systems Engineering, through the Interdisciplinary Programs (IDP) department. The ME department stresses cutting-edge and applied research that enriches our faculty's intellectual creativity and skills while also benefiting students in both lecture rooms and laboratories. ME faculty are engaged in externally-funded research in automobile design, vehicle controls and dynamics, energy system management and development, nanomaterials and manufacturing, biomechanics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing. The ME department strives to provide undergraduate students with a high-quality engineering education that emphasizes both strong fundamentals and hands-on experience. Our curriculum includes flexible senior elective courses in the areas of automotive engineering, nanotechnology, materials and manufacturing, energy systems, and biotechnology. This allows students to work effectively in the local automobile industry as well as in other diversified economic sectors. Our faculty motivate students to learn through classroom teaching and by engaging undergraduate students in their research specialties through various internally- and externally-funded research and educational programs. Many local and regional engineering companies hire our students for co-op or internship opportunities. Nearly all of our students have co-op, internship, or other work experience during their academic careers, thereby allowing them to quickly adapt themselves to industrial settings upon graduation. Our Study Abroad program is expanding yearly, providing global study opportunities for students. The ME department offers a graduate program with full-time or part-time study available, suitable for locally-employed engineers. All of our graduate courses are offered in the evening from 6-9 p.m., and it is also possible to complete the MSE-ME degree fully online. Many full-time students choose to engage in research and are supported by faculty members through externally-funded grants. We also offer certificate programs designed for those students who want to develop special skills in certain niche areas. I thank you for browsing through our department web site. Whatever your background and interest, you are certainly welcome to visit the beautiful Dearborn campus of the University of Michigan, located next to the national historical site of the magnificent Henry Ford Estate.
