Note Taking As an Accommodation
It can be difficult for students with a variety of disabilities to focus on a classroom lecture and take notes at the same time. These disabilities include but are not limited to: Hearing loss Vision loss Learning disabilities Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Because the government recognizes that note taking presents a barrier for students with these and other disabilities, there are laws that require schools to provide note taking for these students to give them equal access to instruction during and after class.

Laws Concerning Accommodations
The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 mandate equal access to education, employment, and public services for qualified individuals with disabilities. In an educational setting, note taking services may be deemed a reasonable accommodation. Accommodations are provided to level the playing field for individuals with disabilities and provide equal access, not to give individuals with disabilities an unfair advantage. Understanding Disabilities
Disability can include any invisible or visible, emotional, social and educational challenge. People with disabilities often face insensitivity that can make it difficult for them to interact with others. In some cases, the insensitivity arises when others don’t understand the nature of the disability, or do not recognize it. Particularly in school environments, people with disabilities are often ostracized, teased or bullied. Learning to be sensitive to people with disabilities is an important part of tolerance toward others. Credit:

Recognizing Our Prejudices
Everyone fights some kind of stereotype, people with disabilities are no exception. However, the difference is that the barriers that people with disabilities face begin with others’ attitudes about them. The greatest barrier is not the physical inability of those with disabilities but rather the attitude/perceptions others have to those with disabilities. What is important to recognize is that these attitudes are often rooted in misinformation and misunderstandings about what it is like to live with a disability. Add examples here? Credit:

Myth 1: People with disabilities are brave and courageous. Fact: Adjusting to a disability requires adapting to a lifestyle, not bravery and courage. Myth 2: All persons who use wheelchairs are chronically ill or sickly. Fact: The association between wheelchair use and illness may have evolved through hospitals using wheelchairs to transport sick people. A person may use a wheelchair for a variety of reasons, none of which may have anything to do with lingering illness. Myth 3: Wheelchair use is confining; people who use wheelchairs are "wheelchair-bound." Fact: A wheelchair, like a bicycle or an automobile, is a personal assistive device that enables someone to get around. Myth 4: All persons with hearing disabilities can read lips. Fact: Lip-reading skills vary among people who use them and are never entirely reliable. Credit:

Myth 5: People who are blind acquire a "sixth sense." Fact: Although most people who are blind develop their remaining senses more fully, they do not have a "sixth sense." Myth 6: People with disabilities are more comfortable with "their own kind." Fact: In the past, grouping people with disabilities in separate schools and institutions reinforced this misconception. Today, many people with disabilities take advantage of new opportunities to join mainstream society. Myth 7: Non-disabled people are obligated to "take care of" people with disabilities. Fact: Anyone may offer assistance, but most people with disabilities prefer to be responsible for themselves. Myth 8: Curious children should never ask people about their disabilities. Fact: Many children have a natural, uninhibited curiosity and may ask questions that some adults consider embarrassing. But scolding curious children may make them think having a disability is "wrong" or "bad." Most people with disabilities won't mind answering a child's question. Credit:

Myth 9: The lives of people with disabilities are totally different than the lives of people without disabilities. Fact: People with disabilities go to school, get married, work, have families, do laundry, grocery shop, laugh, cry, pay taxes, get angry, have prejudices, vote, plan and dream like everyone else. Myth 10: It is all right for people without disabilities to park in accessible parking spaces, if only for a few minutes. Fact: Because accessible parking spaces are designed and situated to meet the needs of people who have disabilities, these spaces should only be used by people who need them. Myth 11: Most people with disabilities cannot have sexual relationships. Fact: Anyone can have a sexual relationship by adapting the sexual activity. People with disabilities can have children naturally or through adoption. People with disabilities, like other people, are sexual beings. Myth 12: People with disabilities always need help. Fact: Many people with disabilities are independent and capable of giving help. If you would like to help someone with a disability, ask if he or she needs it before you act. Credit:

Myth 13: There is nothing one person can do to help eliminate the barriers confronting people with disabilities. Fact: Everyone can contribute to change. You can help remove barriers by: Understanding the need for accessible parking and leaving it for those who need it Encouraging participation of people with disabilities in community activities by using accessible meeting and event sites Understanding children's curiosity about disabilities and people who have them Advocating a barrier-free environment Speaking up when negative words or phrases are used about disability Writing producers and editors a note of support when they portray someone with a disability as a "regular person" in the media Accepting people with disabilities as individuals capable of the same needs and feelings as yourself, and hiring qualified disabled persons whenever possible Credit:

Common barriers that students with disabilities face in the classroom that impact note taking
Needing more time to process information given Dexterity issues and/or health conditions with hands that impede note taking Unable to take notes while listening and/or hearing loss that can require a student to watch an interpreter or instructor, which impacts the quality of notes a student can take Being easily distracted and/or unable to focus for an entire class and/or needing frequent breaks during class Having to leave class for medical reasons and/or being unable to attend all classes due to health Vision disabilities and/or eye fatigue that impact note taking Students take notes but may miss other crucial information

Helpful Tips When Meeting Friends With Visible Disabilities:
It's okay to offer your help to someone, but don't just go ahead. Ask first. Or wait for someone to ask you for your help. It's okay to ask people about their disabilities and it's also okay for them not to talk about it. Remember, just because people use wheelchairs, it doesn't mean they are sick. Lots of people who use wheelchairs are healthy and strong. When you're talking with people who use wheelchairs, sit down so their necks won't get sore looking up at you. It's okay to use words like "see", "hear", "walk" and "run" when you're talking with friends who have disabilities. It's okay to ask people who have speech problems to repeat what they said if you didn't understand the first time. If an interpreter is helping you speak with a deaf person, make sure you talk to the deaf person, not the interpreter. Don't speak loudly when talking to blind people. They hear as well as you do. Never pet or play with Assistance Animals. They can't be distracted from the job they are doing. Invite friends with disabilities to the same events/activities you would friends without disabilities. Think about ways to make sure that they can be included in the things that you do. When you go to restaurants and shopping malls, see if a disabled friend could be there with you. If not, ask the manager to put in ramps, get raised numbers for the elevators, or have braille menus printed. Treat a person with a disability the way you like to be treated. Credit:

Barriers to Take Into Consideration
When giving directions to a person in a wheelchair, consider distance, weather conditions and physical obstacles such as stairs, curbs and steep hills. When directing a person with a visual impairment, use specifics such as "left a hundred feet" or "right two yards". Be considerate of the extra time it might take a person with a disability to get things done or said. Let the person set the pace in walking and talking. When planning events involving persons with disabilities, consider their needs ahead of time. If an insurmountable barrier exists, let them know about it prior to the event. Credit:
