Using the Percent Equation
2
Sales Tax Sales tax on an item is a percent of the item’s price.
To find a total given a percent, use the percent equation to find the part. Then add the part to the whole. Find the total price by adding the sales tax to the item’s price.

Examples A soccer team is having dinner at a restaurant to celebrate their winning season. The frazzled waiter gives them an incomplete bill. Help the team fill in the missing amounts.
4
Examples. Tips are calculated similarly to taxes. Suppose the team brought a total of $175 to pay for dinner. Do they have enough money to tip the waiter 18% of the subtotal? Explain.

Commission Some companies give salespeople a commission, or a percentage of the selling price of each item they sell. Find the amount of money the company earns on the item by subtracting the commission from the selling price. To find a remainder given a percent, use the percent equation to find the part. Then subtract the part from the whole.

Examples At a car dealership, a car salesman is trying to sell a car to his client. His commission rate is 6%. a. How much would the car salesman earn on each car? b. How much would the car dealership make on each car? $12,800 $14,500 $24,500

Examples At a real estate agency, a real estate agent sold a house for $345,000. Her commission rate is 3%. a. How much did the real estate agent earn on the house? b. How much did the seller make on the house?

Jon has a new job at an electronics store
Jon has a new job at an electronics store. He has two options for how to be paid. He plans to work 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. He also estimates that he can sell about $3,500 worth of electronics per week. Which option would give Jon more earnings per week? Explain.

Examples A salesperson works 40 hours per week at a job where he has two options for being paid. Option A is an hourly wage of $27. Option B is a commission rate of 10% on weekly sales. How much does he need to sell this week to earn the same amount with the two options? A car salesperson works 40 hours per week at a job where she has two options for being paid. Option A is an hourly wage of $15. Option B is a commission rate on weekly sales, and she averages $6000 in sales each week. What commission rate does she need to have to earn the same amount with the two options?

Examples Restaurants frequently add an 18% tip on the pre-tax bill when the party is 8 people or more. The tax is calculated based on the bill before the tip is included. Last night, 12 friends went out to dinner and decided to split the bill evenly. If the bill without tax or tip was $ and the tax was 8%, how much did each person owe? Tim and Jess work as jewelers. Tim has an hourly wage of $28 and gets overtime for every hour he works over 40 hours. Overtime is a pay ratio of 3 : 2. Jess makes $0.10 for every dollar’s worth of jewelry she sells, up to $250,000. Who earns more money in a week if Tim works 65 hours and Jess sells $18,000 worth of jewelry?
