IM allows you to talk to one person at a time. When the IM session is complete, it will disappear. Client-based IM systems, which require software installation, include AIM, iMessage, and Skype. Short Message Service (SMS) Brief message sent to another mobile device Multimedia Message Service (MMS) Allows images and videos Another popular form of asynchronous communication is text messaging. Using the Short Message Service (SMS), you can send brief electronic messages between mobile devices. Messages that include multimedia such as images or videos use the Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). SnapChat is a mobile photo messaging app that allows you to send a photo or short video message to specific recipients and make it viewable for a specific amount of time. Social media is a collection of tools that: Create user-generated content Connect Network Share video, images, and music Sometimes called Web 2.0 Second screen – the use of a computer or mobile device while watching television to interact with other viewers or enhance content Social media is a collection of tools that enable users to create user-generated content, connect, network, and share. Social media is new technologies that have emerged and are sometimes referred to as Web 2.0. Categories of social media are social network sites, video, image, and music sites. Second screen is a term that refers to the use of a computer or mobile device while watching television to interact with other viewers or enhance content. Today, Facebook has hundreds of millions of users worldwide. Many employers will expect you to be technically literate and use social networking tools, so not having a profile at such a site could be a negative. For a more business-centered social network, consider using a site such as LinkedIn, which is designed for business connections. Virtual communities, such as Second Life and Webkinz, and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG), such as World of Warcraft and Elder Scrolls, enable you to interact online with people in real time using an avatar, or virtual body. Video – YouTube Largest online video-hosting site in the world Viral video – a video that becomes extremely popular Images Flickr is the largest Music Pandora Social sharing sites allow anyone to create and share media. A key feature is the ability to tag items, which makes the sharing more social as users tag not only their creations but also those of others. There are many ways users can share content. Video sharing sites allow you to subscribe, send messages, and make recommendations. YouTube is the largest online video-hosting site in the world. When a video is said to “go viral,” it refers to a video that becomes extremely popular because of recommendations and social sharing. Image sharing sites can be made private or public; examples include Flickr, Photobucket, Shutterfly, and Snapfish. Music sharing sites recommend music based on what you listen to.
