2 Ruler – used to measure the length of small items like a pencil
Meter stick (yard stick) – used to measure the length of medium size items like a lab table Trundle wheel – used to measure the length of large items like a field

3 Test tube clamp – used to hold a single test tube
Test tube – used to heat or hold small amounts of a substance Test tube rack – used to hold several test tubes in an upright position

4 Tongs – used to lift a hot beaker
Forceps – used to pick up small items

5 Graduated Cylinder – used to measure the volume of liquids and used to measure the volume of irregularly shaped objects Meniscus – the measurement found on the graduated cylinder

6 Triple Beam Balance – used to find the mass of an object
Spring scale – used to measure the weight or power of an object

7 Dropper – used to transfer small amounts of liquids; usually has a black top
Pipette – used to transfer small amounts of liquids; usually has a clear top

8 Erlenmeyer Flask – used to hold liquids while being swirled; may be heated
Florence Flask – used to mix chemicals

9 Microscope – used to magnify small objects at a high power
Hand lens/Magnifying glass – used to enlarge objects for easier viewing

10 Hot Plate – used to heat substance
Thermometer – used to take the temperature of a substance

11 Petri dish – used to hold and observe organisms

12 Funnel – used when pouring substances from one container to another

13 Beaker – most common piece of lab equipment; used to hold substances like a cup; glass beakers can be heated

14 Goggles – used to protect your eyes; must be worn when handling chemicals or glass materials
