Address Phone Number (281) Tutorials Schedule (Tuesdays, 4:15pm – 5:00pm) Opportunity to work on homework, concepts they struggle with, reading comprehension, the writing process, test taking strategies, STAAR prep, etc. Website Updates Teacher website will be updated with routine class information, important handouts, calendar updates (for tutorials schedule, tests/quizzes, major projects, grading periods, etc.), the monthly 6th grade ELA newsletter and links to helpful resources for studying / enrichment opportunities.

5 Homework Bingo The first one will be distributed Monday, September 12th and will be due Wednesday, September 28th The majority of homework will be done on a 3-week basis per grading period via “Homework Bingo”. For each 3-week reporting period, students must complete all 15 mini assignments (5 per week) from the provided “Homework Bingo” grid Grades will be based on the number of assignments completed correctly. Example Grading: If 5 assignments are to be completed each week and only 4 are completed, the grade is 80/100 for the week, if the assignments have been submitted correctly to the teacher.

6 Homework Bingo H M W R K Read a magazine
Article. Bring in the name of the article, the byline (who wrote the article), and the name of the magazine. Sensory words appeal to the 5 senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell). Find 4 sentences in your reading that contains sensory words. Submit a list of 8 pronouns you saw in any of your reading. What was it you read? What are the 8 pronouns? List 5 words you found in any of your reading that you didn’t know. What are they? What did you read? Read a book for 20 minutes and submit the title of the book, the chapter and a summary for credit. Create 2 sentences for each type of sentence and submit for credit. Write a paragraph using 5 compound words and submit for credit. Define 5 words you found in your reading that you didn’t know, use them in a sentence, and submit them for credit. Find a newspaper and submit the title of two articles on the front page, the title of the newspaper, and the date.

7 ELA CFA’s & District Checkpoints
CFA’s (Common Formative Assessments) are created by the 6th grade ELA team and given once every 3 weeks to gauge mastery of concepts covered in class (Wednesday, September 7th) District Checkpoints are created by the district ELA department and will be given 4 times in the fall semester to gauge mastery of concepts covered in class (Monday, September 26th) Both CFA’s and District Checkpoints are usually questions in multiple choice and short answer response formats

8 STAAR Testing 6th Grade ELA
More rigorous than 5th grade test Longer Passages Higher Level Questioning Has more questions, however shorter time Students will only have 4 hours for testing Only have 1 opportunity to take the test
