1 How can discussions help scientist clarify scientific information?
Earth Versus Pluto How can discussions help scientist clarify scientific information? 1/28/2018

2 Introduction Scientific Inquiry plays and important role in forming opinions and scientific discovery! 1/28/2018

3 Vocabulary What does discussion mean to you
How would define the word Clarify? What scientific tools are used by scientist when they cannot physically touch or use all of steps of the scientific method What do you know about the Solar System? Planets and Dwarf Planets 1/28/2018

4 Planets and Dwarf Planets
Planets are apart of our solar system 1/28/2018

5 The Planet Earth To be called a planet the object must orbit the Sun.
It must be big enough for gravity to squash it into a round ball, It must have cleared other objects out of the way in its orbital neighborhood. To clear an orbit, a planet must be big enough to pull neighboring objects into the planet itself or sling-shot them around the planet and shoot them off into outer space 1/28/2018

6 The Planet Earth The Earth is unlike every other planet in the Solar System in a number of different ways. It is the only planet that has an atmosphere containing 21 percent oxygen. It is the only planet that has liquid water on its surface. It is the only planet in the solar system that has life. The Earth is the only inner planet (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) to have one large satellite, the Moon.  Mars has two very tiny moons.  Mercury and Venus have none. 1/28/2018

7 Pluto ---The Dwarf Planet
Is a small planet but lacking certain technical criteria that are required for it to be classed as such. Pluto was discovered by use of a telescope in the 1930’s.  The first eight planets orbit the Sun in a path which they have cleared of other objects.  Pluto, however, orbits the sun in a zone which is full of other objects that often pass between Pluto and the Sun. The first eight planets orbit the Sun while keeping the same distance from the Sun.  The Earth is always 93 million miles, one Astronomical Unit, from the Sun.  Pluto, however, orbits in an ellipse, an oval shape which means its distance from the Sun varies.  1/28/2018

8 Discussion Time! Here are the rules scientists:
Each member will share in the discussion Think like a scientist It’s okay to disagree however be respectful of each others opinions! Don’t forget to form a conclusion and be prepared to share your opinions with the class! Most importantly have fun! 1/28/2018

9 Discussion Time! 1/28/2018

10 Sharing Time! Share what your group did to work through this activity?
Summarize key points you want your audience to remember? How did your discussion help clarify Pluto’s reclassification? 1/28/2018

11 Next Step---The Wrap Up!
Independent Activity Reflection: How did my group discussion help clarify Pluto’s reclassification and how can discussions help scientist clarify scientific information? 1/28/2018
