10. Shared Reading
Teacher works with the whole class to read and understand a piece of text.
The teacher is directly teaching and supporting the students’ use of reading strategies, gradually requiring students to move toward using these strategies independently.
Higher Order Thinking will be encouraged.
For example, “What words would you use
to describe the character based on how
they responded to the main event
or challenge?

11. Guided Reading
Is a bridge between Shared Reading and Independent Reading
The goal is to teach students to independently use reading strategies at their own reading level
Groups are flexible and formed based on their reading level
In order to meet the needs of students we may group children across classrooms

12. Read to Self
Describes a time set aside for students to read a “good fit book” or “just right book” that is self-selected
Students use “The Five Finger Rule” to help select “a good fit book” in order to build fluency and confidence as a reader

13. Read Aloud
The teacher reads aloud material that is at students’ comprehension level, but may be above their reading level.
The teacher will periodically stop during the reading to think aloud and discuss their thought process
The teacher will ask the children to turn and talk to a partner about what is happening in the story.

15. MAP (Measures of Academic Progress)
MAP is a computerized adaptive assessment that measures your child’s knowledge of reading and math.
The difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all the previous questions.
Used to measure student progress and growth in reading and math.
Helps teachers understand your child’s areas of strength and weakness and provide appropriate instruction.
Tested 3 times a year (fall, winter, spring)
2nd-6th grade MAP is different from the primary MAP.

16. Fountas and Pinnell (F & P)
Assessments are conducted one-on-one
Determines your child’s instructional reading level (A-Z)
Children are typically tested three times a year
F & P scores may be shared during conferences

17. MATH Go Math! We will be focusing on the following areas:

-Measurement and Data
-Geometry
Math Practice will be sent home nightly if it is not finished in class, it is not collected for a grade.
