iPads in Grade 1
2
Every morning the routine for the students when they come into the classroom is to take their iPad from the charge cart, go onto the weather app, and record the day’s weather in their agenda book. They circle the weather icon on their page and print the temperature. Some will watch the daily weather video before they leave this app. This helps to meet the need of one of their science outcomes.

Printing Practice I have found a way to help the students with their printing practice which also keeps the students engaged. At the beginning of the year they use their finger to trace the correct formation of letters and numbers using different apps designed for this. After we have practiced using these apps, we start using stylus pens which I had approached a local business to donate to our class. Whenever I notice that individuals need to review their printing formation, I recommend they revisit these apps to practice correct formation. This allows me to work 1-1 with the students while motivating the rest to also practice.

The Educreations app lends itself for assessment
The Educreations app lends itself for assessment. The students will explain their work and save it to self-assess later. I can visit their work at my leisure, too.

Pic Collage is an awesome app for Grade 1
Pic Collage is an awesome app for Grade 1. I have used it for representing outcomes in ELA, Science, Health, Math, Arts Ed., and Social Studies.

Another science outcome is met as the students take pictures showing the changes in growth of different objects. They have a first day of school picture of themselves, fish eggs that are now hatching, and various plants they planted from seeds and seedlings, that they record the growth with photos and measuring. We put their photos into Pic Collage near the end of the year.
