1 CHEMnetBASE and Beyond:
CRC Handbooks and Dictionaries in Today’s World Fiona Macdonald* & Megan Eisenbraun CRC Press/Taylor & Francis

2 CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics
From 1913 to present day ACS San Diego Chemistry, Data, & the Semantic Web: An Important Triple to Advance Science

3 CRC Handbook: 103 years and counting
Basic philosophy still unchanged Provides key information on topics most frequently needed by users Broad coverage of data; wide range of users Annual updates allow the most current data to be provided References to original sources

4 97th Edition ISBN 978-1-4987-5428-6 Publishing 24 June 2016 $199
97th Edition ISBN Publishing 24 June $199.95/£ pp Includes ebook (VitalSource) ACS San Diego Chemistry, Data, & the Semantic Web: An Important Triple to Advance Science

5 What did we start with? Diverse information types:
Extremely large tables – Sect. 10: Line Spectra of the Elements, >20,000 rows Chemical structures – Sect. 3: Physical Constants of Organic Compounds Complex data – Sect. 11: Table of the Isotopes Extensive text files – Sect 4: The Elements Graphical data – Sect. 14: Atmospheric Concentration of CO2 Sect. 8: IR Correlation charts ACS San Diego Chemistry, Data, & the Semantic Web: An Important Triple to Advance Science

6 What do we need? User-friendly interface facilitating easy updates
Able to store special characters, numerical values Upload of new tables and incorporation into the system Merge and manipulate data to create new tables Storage of web and print versions of tables Versioning of data updates Exports data for both print (html) and web ACS San Diego Chemistry, Data, & the Semantic Web: An Important Triple to Advance Science

7 What did we do? Created a central substances table with 21 associated physical property tables Imported 715 print tables Converted 482 documents and their tables to Unicode text and html markup Numbers were converted from text strings to recognisable numbers Redesign of tables to render them suitable for database format Designed export routine for print or web ACS San Diego Chemistry, Data, & the Semantic Web: An Important Triple to Advance Science

9 Running Order: Main Contents Search screen - Table of contents expandable menu. Show a document via the login screen. Back to home Contents Search screen using top home button. Show document search - search for 'vitamin c'. (different from old version which searched separately for vitamin or c. Go into a document hit (PCOC). Goes directly to the page on which the hit occurs. show page forward/back and typing in a page number directly. Show Bookmark page. Show 'View Book PDF' Show interactive table. Show interactive table page navigation. Show table sort using buttons in column headers. Show left menu - Back to document (won't click on this at this point) Click on Filter Sort this Table and do a combined filter (maybe d*) and sort (on Mp) Click on Hide/Show columns. Hide a column (e.g. Beilstein no.) Select a few rows Click on Export Data Show example of exporting to html Click Graph Numerical Data Show example of 2 or 3 graph types Click on a substance to show the entry popup (one with a CT, one that is present in several other tables and has several properties) Click the structure icon to show Marvin Show editing a structure, rotation, saving/exporting Show the links to other documents.  Clicking on one goes to that row in the table. Click show full table. Go to chemistry section (flask icon, top bar) Show wildcard/range options. Show adding more properties to the search ,including adding the same >1. linking with AND, OR, NOT Search for structure/chem name. Show hit list. Navigate and sort hit list. Show/Hide columns (drag and drop list, final product will have greater choice). Details button brings up the entry (same window from interactive table). Show archive via top bar (tools menu) Show browsing the editions TOC Search the archive. Show responsive design - reduce menu size. Show quick search from the responsive (small screen) layout Click on a table in hit list to show mobile version of tables.
