Cleopatra Fashion & Style

Cleopatra… the legend Cleopatra was a legend in her time — literally!
Much of what we know about her comes from Roman history. Back then, myth and history were connected, but even in those days she was seen as an icon. She would have worn Roman styles in Rome and Egyptian styles in Egypt. Today her style still lives on. Against popular legend, Cleopatra was not a great beauty. Her beauty came from her charisma and charm. She was also very shrewd, clever, powerful and passionate — a good role model for ladies today. Cleopatra – Played by Elizabeth Taylor in the film of Cleopatra’s life

Cleopatra’s Bathing Cleopatra, like many Egyptians of her time, was a big fan of beauty products. Her beauty tips are still famous to this day. She was well-known for having a bath in milk and honey in order to keep her skin soft, and she enjoyed wearing scented oils and perfumes.

Cleopatra’s Clothes In the New Kingdom, they wore sheaths decorated with gold thread and colourful beadwork, and a type of sari. These dresses were made of linen, and decorated with beautifully coloured patterns and beadwork. Both men and women wore sandals. Sandals made of vegetable fibres or leather were a common type of footwear. But, men and women, including the wealthy, were frequently portrayed barefoot. The pharaohs would wear leopard skins over their shoulders and added a lion’s tail to hang from their belt.

Cleopatra’s Hair Cleopatra had a hairdresser. She washed her hair and had it scented, and sometimes lightened with henna. She also wore a wig. Wigs were made from human hair and horse hair and had vegetable-fibre padding on the underside. The hair was arranged into careful plaits and strands, they were often long and heavy. They had ornaments woven into them. All of these styles are still used today.

Cleopatra’s Make up Cleopatra also wore the makeup look we often associate with ancient Egypt today, by using kohl eyeliner to extend the line of the eye and powdering the lids with green crushed Malachite. Today we have substituted the green Malachite for blue eyeshadow. Make up was applied with the fingers or a kohl pencil (made of wood, ivory or stone), eye paint emphasized the eyes and protected them from the bright sunlight. The powdered green malachite was brushed under the eyes. Rouge to colour the face and lips was made from red ochre.

Cleopatra’s Jewelry The elegant design of Egyptian jewellery often reflected religious ideas. They used images of the gods and goddesses; hieroglyphic symbols; and birds, animals and insects that played a role in their religon. Commonly seen were the Scarab; the Eye of Re; lotus plants; the vulture and the hawk; the cobra; and symbols such as the ankh (symbol of life). Like all jewelry when Cleopatra died her jewelry was placed in her grave to be used in the afterlife, along with many other personal items.
