THINKER: Historian John Lewis Gaddis suggests that the Korean War could be called “A Comedy of Errors.” Why do you think this is? What misconceptions guided the thinking of Truman, Stalin and Mao during the planning and course of the Korean War?

2. Homework: due Tuesday!
In class tomorrow, we will study the Non-Aligned Movement.
This movement was a cooperative effort by new countries in Africa and Asia to create an alternative to the eastern/western blocs.
Homework will be done in two parts:
1. Read/annotate pages 84-87
2. Research one country that joined this movement (not Egypt or Cuba!). As you research, on the back of your packet, describe the following:
Why they joined the Non-Aligned Movement (goals??)
Advantages of this country being apart of the movement
Whether or not there was a relationship with the PRC, USSR, or U.S.
How the Cold War impacted this country

4. Syngman Rhee 1945 - leader of provisional government in ROK
Appointed by US because he was pro-Western and anti-communist
After elections in 1948, became first president of South Korea
Extremely oppressive and unpopular in South Korea
Was openly hostile/aggressive towards the North = U.S. suspicious!

5. Kim Il Sung
Leader of North Korea from its establishment (1948) until his death (1994)
Member of CCP (Fought in CCW)
A Major in the Soviet Red Army during WWII
Soviets installed him as leader of prov.gov. in December 1945
Created Korean People’s Army (KPA) with direct aide from Stalin
In 1948, the DPRK was established and Kim was chosen as premier (against UN)

As you know, the outcome of the Korean War continues to impact the relationship between North Korea and the Western world.
You will now watch a PBS/Frontline documentary, “The Secret State of North Korea.”
The film uses undercover footage from inside the country as well as interviews with defectors
Pay attention! Be ready to discuss next class!

10. Effects of the Korean War
Read the “Effects of the Korean War” handout, as well as, pages in your chapter 5 packet. As you read, use the worksheet to summarize the effects of the war on:
North and South Korea
China
USSR US UN
Effects on the Cold War as a whole
When you are finished, divide into six groups (1 group/box) and review the effects. You may create a chart on the board.

As you watch this video, take notes on important battles, tactics, and strategies used to fight the Korean War.
