OGC Interoperability Program Arctic Spatial Data Pilot
January 2017
2
Arctic Spatial Data Pilot (ArcticSDP)
Sponsored by USGS and NRCan, in collaboration with the Arctic SDI Participants Inform the Arctic SDI Strategic Plan Support the Arctic Council and Arctic SDI with direct participation of AC Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) Test interoperability of international standards Showcase the value of a data rich, environment to stakeholders to further understand and respond to impacts of climate change and human activity Online: bit.ly/arcticsdp
3
Why are we doing this … What’s the Benefit?
Support Building a Data Rich Arctic SDI To allow for better informed decisions and more efficient administration in the Arctic To help us better to predict, understand and react to changes in the Arctic -- From the Arctic SDI Fact Sheet Demonstrate the Result of Good Data Management Practices Because incorporating standards takes commitment Opportunity to help advance technology and guide standards to increase interoperability Where Science Meets Standards!

Participants Sponsors: USGS & NRCan, organized by OGC 8 participants
Canada Compusult: WFS, Client, SOS ECERE: WMS ESRI: WFS, Client, WCS, data Pyxis: Client US GMU: CSW NGA: data Belgium Luciad: ER, WFS, Client, WPS International: Polarview: data and service expertise

Exploiting the OGC Pilot Process
Geospatial Data Community Involvement Let data tell stories with a use case based formula Will result in at least one video with Arctic Council level audience Meant to demonstrate the value of standards in an environment that is principally built as a system of systems Extends globally across National and International SDIs for access to Regional data International participation includes government & non-government data, client and service providers

Phase One Results 27 Submissions to the Request for Information (RFI) Baseline Inventory of Available Data Resulted in a 127 Page Report Covering Stakeholders Requirements and Constraints Architecture Data Standards Applications Use Cases & Scenarios This information was used to inform Phase 2 & Formulate the RFQ bit.ly/arcticsdpreport Online:

Phase Two Overarching Theme: Food Security (Inuit perspective, i.e. holistic view!) Idea is to demonstrate how an “IT ecosystem”, i.e. SDI, can help understanding the Arctic Ecosystem We will develop a roughly 45min presentation style that includes live presentation and short videos. The 45min is the "all inclusive" version, that can be shortened depending on the audience. Therefore it contains technical elements as well as high level strategic elements. The presenter can than pick the right elements for a given presentation. Aspects to demonstrate: no data bad, data available but not accessible is better but not good. data that can be discovered and directly accessed is best, it makes stories to become "live" From the Inuit perspective: Lack of information and no access to information was one of the important aspects in the context of food insecurity. Studies need to be made available: We should dig out studies and show how difficult/easy it is to get to the data and make use of it. Starting point: there is a good foundation already (show data access options, e.g. to Alaska Ocean Observing System) Bring additional data online; (show Thermokarst example), currently experimented with at Compusult and Ecere. Document the process of bringing data online and make it discoverable and accessable to others. Archived data in hidden DBs is expensive to access Layering maps is an important first steps make sure that we present the good foundation that we have - and then show gaps next! Data is often published at the comfort level of the publisher, but this often prevents answering un-anticipated questions that can be answered in case that data is offered at standardized interfaces. from: INUIT CIRCUMPOLAR COUNCIL-ALASKA ALASKAN INUIT FOOD SECURITY CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: HOW TO ASSESS THE ARCTIC FROM AN INUIT PERSPECTIVE

The Spirit of All Food security is not only about “food”. It includes all other elements that depend and relate on it, e.g. gas price may effect hunting/fishing that effects food that effects health…

Key Themes Climate Change Changing Shipping Routes & Frequency
We take several aspects such as climate change and demonstrate their role in the ecosystem.
