Welcome to lecture #2 on Hebrews
2
[2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; [3] Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
3
[2b]whom he hath appointed heir of all things
Christ in His position as the second Adam
4
Adam and Eve had to “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” (Gen 1:26-28). Lost capability through the Fall
5
Christ from eternity appointed as Heir
I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee…I shall give thee … the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession (Ps 2:7-8) …and the glory that should follow. (1 Peter 1:11) Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you (1 Peter 1:20)
6
Christ from eternity appointed as Heir
All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth (Mat 28:18) Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands… (John 13:3)
7
Received it also in time - at His ascension
when he [God] raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly place… Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet … (Eph 1: 20-22)
8
Received it also in time - at His ascension
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil. 2:9-11)
9
Heirship with Christ for believers
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. (Rom 8:17)
10
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified (I Pet. 4:13-14)
11
[2c] by whom also he made the worlds
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Gen. 1:1)
12
[2c] by whom also he made the worlds
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth (Gen. 1:1) Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created (Rev 4:11)
13
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters (Gen 1:2c)
14
[2c] by whom also he made the worlds
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 1:3)
15
[2c] by whom also he made the worlds
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 1:3) …God, who created all things by Jesus Christ (Eph 3:9)
16
[2c] by whom also he made the worlds
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 1:3) …God, who created all things by Jesus Christ (Eph 3:9) Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him (Col. 1:16)
17
Triune God involved in creation
By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth (Ps. 33:6) Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast (Ps 33:8-9).
18
[10] And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: [11] They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; [12] And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed…
19
3a Who being the brightness of his glory
20
3a Who being the brightness of his glory
he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not (Is. 52:2-3)
21
3a Who being the brightness of his glory
Jesus saith unto him, … he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? (John 14:9)
22
Glory of Christ (1) He received power over all flesh to give eternal life to as many as the Father has given Him (John 17:2)
23
Jesus only can deliver And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent (John 17:3)
24
Glory of Christ (2) I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. (John 17:4)
25
Glory of Christ (2) I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. (John 17:4) I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world… (John 17:6)
26
Glory of Christ (2) I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. (John 17:4) I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world… (John 17:6) …and they have believed that thou didst send me. (John 17:8)
27
Glory of Christ (2) I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. (John 17:4) I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world… (John 17:6) …and they have believed that thou didst send me. (John 17:8) … and I am glorified in them (John 17:10)
28
Glory of Christ (3) - Believers are one
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one. (John 17:21-22)
29
Glory of Christ (4) Miracles (John 2:11)
He knew man’s thoughts (Nathanael, Thomas) God giving testimony audibly (His baptism and Mt of Transfiguration)
30
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (1 Pet. 2:16-17)
31
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts (2 Pet. 1:19)
32
