Promoting Student Mobility
In 2010, the international student population reached nearly 3.6 million worldwide (UNESCO, 2012) An increase of almost 50 percent over the past six years (2.5 million in 2004) UNESCO further predicted the number to rise to 7 million by 2020 Progress of ASEAN mobility from MIT to AIMS

During the 14th ASEAN Summit in 2009, it was declared that several actions needed to be taken by 2015 to strengthen the role of education in building the ASEAN community Education has a significant role to play in contributing to the political and security, the economic and the socio-cultural pillars supporting ASEAN

Economic Pillar Conditions supportive of greater cross-border mobility for students and skilled workers A national skills framework in each of the ASEAN member countries, as an incremental step towards the establishment of an ASEAN skills recognition framework An ASEAN competency-based occupational standard A common set of competency standards especially for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a basis for benchmarking with a view to promoting mutual recognition

Brunei Darussalam and ASEAN
Brunei Darussalam have been actively involved in various education activities with ASEAN countries such as through the: ASEAN University Network (AUN) the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) The Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL) Student mobility, research collaboration, and joint conferences

Conclusions HEIs are responding to the various challenges it face
HEIs play an important role as the engine for national and ASEAN economic growth and societal progress
