World Systems Theory
4
Answer the following question in writing
Is it possible for all countries of the world to be economic equals?
5
Definition Theory of global interaction and integration that contends that: 1. The world can be divided into three types of regions depending on relative power in economic interactions: Core Semi-Peripheral Peripheral
6
2. The relationship between regions is determined by technological, military, and economic advantages: Infrastructure Military technologies allowing domination Capital Trade balances and economic power
8
3. The relationship between regions is necessarily unequal and must remain so as long as the world system is in place Exploitation necessary component Technological advantage is chronic: core countries will always be ahead Exploited areas will suffer economic setbacks that keep them from becoming core or even semi-peripheral
10
Critics of World Systems Theory
Modernization Theory The development of key technologies in all regions of the world will result in a global marketplace with many cores. Principles of good governance (i.e. the Rule of Law) if exported will result in progress by “peripheral” regions Globalization will bring an end to national economies and regional differences
11
Modernization Theory “Core”-”Semi-Peripheral” and “Peripheral” regions can be within a region, making the exploitation of other regions unnecessary or less important The availability of global capital from international institutions (e.g. the World Bank and International Monetary Fund) eliminates much of the advantages advanced (core) areas have.
12
Critics of World Systems Theory
Neo-Marxism See a global struggle between rich and poor. Think that World Systems Theory is too conservative – doesn’t explain persistent inequality both between and within regions New “core” regions will continue to exploit “semi-core” and “peripheral” sectors regardless of the level of technological sharing or availability of capital. “Rule of Law” in place to protect interests of multinational corporations; will result in the orderly exploitation of peripheral regions
13
Applicability to World History
Provides a model with which to look at and analyze World History from the 13th century onward (and some say even earlier). Allows for study of unified, organized history Accounts for historical causation of present inequalities
14
Colonial relationships
Different types of influence: Settler Colonies Treaty Port Cities Trading Posts Protectorates Generally, the colonies are expected to export raw materials and import manufactured goods from the mother country
15
Closure Explain the World Systems Theory in your own words using 2-3 sentence. Find one news article that is either evidence that supports or opposes the World Systems Theory. Explain how it either supports or opposes the theory.
