13 Homework Principles Why give homework?
It can inform parents about work going on in class; It can further stimulate enthusiasm for learning; It takes advantage of the home environment and resources and the chance for some one to one adult time; It can be a great source for gathering topic information to share with all the children; It is a great opportunity to rehearse key skills such as times tables, doubling facts, addition sums, spellings, handwriting and other key facts; It helps to foster good habits of organisation and self-discipline in preparation for the demands of Secondary School.

14 Homework at Ben Jonson Balance between home and school learning.
Length of day for children. Homework needs to fit family routines and be an enjoyable, shared experience. If it is an area where children are interested they can be encouraged to extend their learning. Not part of teacher assessment; more an opportunity to share learning with an interested partner. Homework is discussed and feedback is given in class when it is returned.

15 Variety of homework at Ben Jonson
Family homework Online learning opportunities English Mathematics Art Spelling Music

16 Homework expectations
These will vary from year group to year group but should include the following elements: Reading Spelling Literacy – usually some form of writing task Maths There will be small differences between year groups which your child’s teacher should let you know about All homework expectations will be included in the Pupil Handbook

17 Family Homework - Expectations
We expect every child to interact with the homework – no other homework is given during the holiday. Minimum expectation is that each child writes or draws on to the back sheet of the homework Families do not have to complete suggested activities – you could do your own thing!
