4 Scorekeeper & Timekeepers
“Rules” link on website. One parent from each team as scorekeeper or timekeeper for each game. One scorekeeper and one timekeeper (only one each) sit at the sideline table at half court during the game. Children may not sit at the table UNLESS absolutely necessary.

5 Timekeeper Duties Run the Scoreboard Start/stop clock during play
Change possession arrow if one Track points, quarters (automatic), bonus situations Ring buzzer at end of quarters (set to automatic) Remind referees: Half way point of each quarter Remind coaches: Substitutes and fouls ASSIST THE SCOREKEEPER

6 Scorekeeper Duties Scoresheets for both teams Running scores
Individual points Fouls (personal/team/technical) Timeouts Player points, fouls, playing-time requirements (min/max), scoring limits Notify officials of foul bonus or maximum point total (per player) situations ASSIST THE TIMEKEEPER

7 Game Day - Arrive early! Write player numbers in scorebooks next to appropriate names. No visitors at table during game NO COACHING Show restraint in “cheering.” You are a member of the officiating team.

8 Time of Games Grades Pre-K thru 4th: 6 minutes per QTR Grades 5th thru 12th: 8 minutes per QTR

9 When to Stop the Clock We use a running clock. Clock stops only for:
Timeouts, Shooting fouls Player gets fouled while shooting, or Any foul in bonus situation Each whistle during last 2 minutes of 4th quarter unless a team is ahead by 20 pts when the 2 minutes starts

10 When to Start the Clock Clock starts when:
Jump ball or in-bounds pass touched by a receiving player on either team Referee will signal by moving hand down Breaks 1 minute between 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th 3 minutes at half-time (between 2nd/3rd) You can program clock for half times

11 Time-outs Timeouts (be sure to mark on scoresheet)
Two per half Two per overtime period Timeout starts when referee signals timeout (not coach or player) No carryovers previous periods or overtimes “Referee timeouts” don’t count against limits – e.g., injuries, problem resolutions, stray balls, etc. Referee also calls brief timeout for substitutions at mid point of ALL quarters

12 Fouls Each personal foul = a team foul Technical Fouls
Mark in both places on score sheet Technical Fouls A technical foul on a player = a personal foul = and a team foul A technical fouls on a coach = a team foul Two technical fouls in same game against same player or coach: Ejection and subject to disciplinary action

13 Bonus Situation (Team Fouls)
Begins on 7th team foul in each half Fouled player gets a 1-and-1 at the line Make first shot - earns second shot Miss first shot - no second shot Ball is live on second shot if missed Double Bonus Begins on 10th team foul in each half Any player fouled will have 2 foul shots Clock stops on all fouls on team “in the bonus”

14 Playing Time Rules when teams have 7+ players
For teams with 7+players Each player half of ALL quarters. Mid-QTR substitutions are mandatory Starters can return for a starter ONLY during an official timeout in the bottom of the quarter AND starters can ONLY be substituted for a starter that remained in game.

15 Playing Time Rules (6 or less players)
Teams are allowed free substitution if they have 6 or less players present to play. The coach of the team with 6 players must notify the scorekeeper, referees and opposing coach prior to the start of the game. If a missing player shows up after game starts, they are allowed to play, but teams are not required to put them in game until start of next quarter. If missing player(s) show after game starts and are not listed in scorebook by coach, penalty is: Technical foul

16 Playing Time Rules (5 or fewer players)
All players will play the entire game Fewer than 5 players Team must have at least 4 players to start a game Games will start with 4 on 4 if a team only has 4, but once 5th player shows, regular rules apply. Game stopped, 5th player goes in for both teams and after that, if a player fouls out you can play 2,3,4 on 5. Any team may finish the game less than 5 players Team must have at least 2 players to play

17 Playing Time Rules Violations during a game = technical foul
Chronic violations will result in disciplinary action Scorekeeper must notify each coach and the referee when a possible playing time violation is about to occur before the beginning of a period. (Ring the buzzer.) Mark quarters played (full or partial) on score sheet “/” for players who start quarter “\” for players entering after start of quarter (subs) “X” for players completing entire quarter

18 Players Arriving Late When a player arrives late, the rules for the larger number of players apply. Player arriving after the start of any QTR may not play in the first half of that quarter Playing Time Rules A player arriving late is still required to play in balance of the game.

19 Scoring (Foul Shots) Free Throws Made
Mark a line thru the box in the running score for the team’s score in the game. Optional you can put the jersey number of the player who scored the basket below the box. Indicate a foul point by posting a “1” in the individual points section

20 Scoring (2-point FG) 2-point field goals
Mark in running score section by drawing a line through two boxes for the team’s score. Optional: Write the jersey number of the player who scored the points below the boxes. Mark a “2” in the individual points section of the score sheet

21 Scoring (… more) 3-point shots
In effect if court has a 3-point circle (Wilder doesn’t have three point arc ) Mark 3-point baskets with a line across 3 boxes in the running score and a “3” in the individual score area. Optional: Write the jersey number of the player who scored the points below the boxes.

22 20-Point Rule 20-point rule (applies in 5th grade and above only
No team leading by 20 points or more may pressure the ball in the opponent’s backcourt Technical foul for 2nd and subsequent warnings

23 OVERTIMES NO games end in a tie First Overtime is 3 minutes
Second Overtime is 2 minutes Third overtime is Sudden Death Running clock in all overtimes Overtimes are started with coin toss side out Two time outs per overtime and they do NOT carry over Whoever scores first in sudden death wins.

24 Point Spread Rule If a team is ahead by 25 points at the half, the losing team has the option to request a RUNNING clock for the second half. The losing coach can also request that scores NOT be displayed on the scoreboard. Once the decision is made, it is final regardless if team comes back. Clock runs and scores stay off board. In the final TWO (2) minutes of any game, if a team is ahead by 20 points the clock runs continuous except for time outs and official time outs.

25 FOULS Players foul out of the game on the 5th foul. LiL-TYKES division (Pre-K) will foul out on the 6th foul

26 Possession Arrow Indicates which team will get the ball next in a “jump ball” situation Start game with no arrow. Work with the referee regarding possession arrow Take note of which team first controls the ball. Figure out which way they’re going. Arrow points toward the other direction (i.e., toward the basket at which the other team will be shooting)

27 Possession Arrow (cont.)
Switch arrow just after ball is received in-bounds following a “jump ball” call by the referee. Switch arrow just after ball is received in-bounds at the start of the 2nd and 4th QTRs Do not switch the arrow at half-time. Ask the ref. Some will switch the arrow during half-time and instruct you to switch it again once the ball is in-bounded at the start of the 3rd quarter. This is equivalent to not switching it at all, which is an acceptable alternative. Good communication with referees is essential.

28 Scoreboard Depending on scorebox, you may have to ‘reset’ the box for a new game. See Box

29 Scoreboard (cont.) The side of the scoreboard used for each team depends on where each team sits, not on the direction of play. Typically the Home team sits on the left, but look at scoreboard and they should sit on the side that corresponds to “home’

30 Clock Operation Add or subtract time in case of timekeeping error
Clock must be stopped to add or subtract minutes. If clock is counting up: Press <Countdown> key

31 Scoreboard Operation Scoring
Increase home or guest score by pressing the <Home Score> or <Guest Score> buttons Decrease home or guest score by pressing the <-1 Home> or <-1 Guest> buttons Scores on back of scoreboard should match those on the front (i.e., left/right sides) If not, Press the RESET button, then the POSSESSION CHANGE button.

32 Scoreboard Operation Bonus Keys
<Home bonus> or <Guest bonus> to light <Bonus clear> to turn off Possession Arrow Toggles back and forth If clock is counting up: <Countdown>, 32

33 Score sheet Signatures
BVYA does not require the coaches or referees, scorekeeper, and timekeeper to sign scoresheet(s) after each game. Not a requirement. It’s best to reconcile the scoring sections continuously during the game, rather than waiting until the end. DO THIS WHEN CLOCK STOPS! The scorebook is the official record of the game, NOT THE SCORE BOARD. There are no protests allowed.

34 Important Reminders “Running score” is the official score – mark it first and include the number of the player who scored, then mark the points in the individual player section. You are an official of the game. Restrain your cheering. Definitely no coaching from the table. If you have any questions, ask the referee! Last but certainly not least, HAVE FUN AND CHEER THE KIDS ON

45 IMPORTANT REMINDERS Once game is over, make sure to total out quarters and write down final score on one of the pages. For example: Spurs win Referees do not have to sign the book after the games in case they ask Scorekeepers don’t have to have a badge, but coaches do! If final game of day, consolidate all the game materials on table, unplug scoreboard controller and place pencils & other ‘stuff’ in box If you are unsure about something, ask the referees, they are there to help you as well.
