2 The History of Ancient Egypt
The unified kingdom of Egypt was formed c.3150 by King Menes. This lead to a series of dynasties that ruled Egypt for the next three millennia. The Eighteenth Dynasty began the period named the New Kingdom. During this period the kingdom of Egypt reached as far south as Tombos in Nubia. This period is noted for some of the most well known Pharaohs, including Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Akhenaten and his wife Nefertiti, Tutankhamun and Ramesses II. Alexander the great conquered Egypt during the Ptolemaic Period. The Roman Empire gained control of Egypt during the Roman Period and later Christianity took root in Egypt and the Christian Emperor Theodosius introduced legislation that banned pagan rites and closed temples.

3 Ancient Religious Beliefs
The ancient Egyptians believed in the afterlife and gods who had supernatural powers. The Egyptians would call to these gods in a time of need. These gods were worshiped in temples. The Egyptians would prey and give offering to their gods. They gave offerings because the gods were not always viewed as benevolent. These people believed that every person has a shadow, a soul, a life force and a name. The heart, rather than the brain, was considered the seat of thoughts and emotions. Their ultimate goal after death was to become a blessed dead by joining their life force and their soul. After this they would be judged by the weight of their heart and if they were worthy they would continue to walk the earth in their spiritual form.
