Elementary Education in Slovenia
9 years (6-14 years of age) Compulsory Curriculum – Activity Days (Technical, Cultural, Sports, Natural Science) Compulsory Curriculum – School in Nature (3 or more days)

School in Nature Introduced in 1963 (first only swimming and skiing)
Elementary School Act 1996 (has to be organised) Part of compulsory curriculum since 2011

School in Nature – objectives
To achieve certain objectives with new methods through different subjects and activities To connect different school subjects (natural science, social studies, technical knowledge, sports, outdoor education) To use and introduce specific methods

School in Nature – organization
For Schools is obligatory to organise out-of-school classes at least twice during Elementary Education Participation is voluntary for school children (most are participating) Most Schools organize it almost every year – school children attend it at least twice during their Elementary Education

Centre for School and Outdoor Education – CSOE
Established in 1992 by the Government As part of the Ministry of Education Specialised for programmes in nature (Outdoor Education) Interdisciplinary programmes Publishing School in Nature magazine (distributed in Schools)

CSOE – interesting numbers
Around participants yearly (public programme) 60 % of School population in Slovenia yearly 5-day programme (65 EUR/participant) Contribution only for residence and food Staff is financed by Ministry of Education Mostly all programmes are free of charge

CSOE programmes include objectives contained in syllabi (Kindergarten, Elementary, Secondary School, High School) Emphasis on nature science, social science, sports, outdoor activities Interdisciplinary programmes – learning and creative workshops with a focus on social skills and interpersonal relationships Thematic weeks Project weeks Programmes for gifted students

Benefits of Outdoor Education
Mutual learning and socializing outside the home environment. Making new friendships. Getting to know new places, activities, people – their habits and customs. Acquisition of new knowledge and skills. Developing a responsible attitude towards the environment. Learning about interrelationships between man and nature. Learning about the importance of sustainable development for man and nature. The promotion of tolerance and respect for others.
