1. Welcome to Year 1!

2. In the morning Children to line up on the playground.
The expectation is that they come in independently.
They should bring their reading book and diary, a water bottle, coat and bag every day.
Extras to bring: lunch box and toast money (£1 a week).
Children should independently put their belongings in the right places.

3. INDEPENDENCE!

4. To help your child become independent:
Label all items and check that these have not become faded over time.
Let them pack their own reading bag the night before.
Practice getting dressed and undressed by themselves (especially buttons and laces).
They must start to take responsibility for their own belongings.

5. Your role:
Your child needs to be reading at least 3 times a week at home.
Please check your child’s bag each night for letters and information.
Supporting your child with their homework.

6. Attendance and punctuality
Please ensure your child arrives at school by 8:40. After this time they will be missing their guided reading lesson each day.
Please ensure that you are on time at the end of the day. Please stand at a safe distance.
Attendance target = 96%

7. Transition
Year 1 is currently following the same structure to their day as they did in reception – the wheel of learning.
By half term this will gradually start to change as the children become ready for it so that by Spring term a more formal day will be implemented.
This will all be done when we feel that they are ready and very gently so they don’t notice any sudden changes.

8. Reading
3 times a week.
Each child will read 1-1 with an adult over the week.
They will take part in guided reading sessions daily therefore diaries may appear to be filled in less by school staff.
Books will be changed as necessary and the same book may be repeated sometimes.
Reading is more than about saying the words!

9. Homework
This will be given out every Thursday and must be returned by the following Tuesday ( except holidays!)
Maths
Topic
Spellings
Balance!

10. Phonics
Towards the end of the year your child will be given the statutory phonics test.
Phonics is taught daily.
To support them there are many games such as ‘phonics play’ available for free on the internet.
Reading regularly also has a massive impact.

11. Tests
Towards Christmas children will take part in PIRA (reading) and PUMA (maths) tests.
These will be carried out in very small groups and not advertised as tests.
The only formal test in Year 1 is the phonics test and the children always enjoy this immensely and do not even realise it is being carried out!
Results will be given out with their reports at the end of the year.
