3. The Christmas Lottery
On December 22nd is the “Christmas Lottery Draw”.
Spaniards buy one-tenth (or more) with the hope to earn millions of euros and watch draw on TV.
The first prize is 3 million euros and it’s called “El Gordo de Navidad”.
The children of the San Ildelfonso School in Madrid “sing” the numbers and prizes.

5. Christmas Eve December 24th is Christmas Eve.
On Christmas Eve, the family eats dinner together. They eat the traditional “Christmas Turkey”.
After dinner, the family eats turrón (hard candy) and sings villancicos (Christmas carols).
At midnight, many people go to church for the Misa de Gallo (Midnight Mass).
For Christmas, Spaniards decorate their homes with a Belén (Nativity scene) and a Christmas tree.

7. Holy Innocents Day
The Holy Innocents Day (similar to April Fools) is on December 28th.
They do pranks on friends and family members. The pranks are called “inocentadas”.
The most common prank is to stick a paper figure on the back of another person.
On that day, the media (TV, radio, newspapers) publish fake news.

8. New Year‘s Eve
The night of December 31st is Nochevieja (New Year’s Eve).
That night Spaniards dine with family or friends at home or at a restarurant.
In Spain, there is a tradition to eat “the 12 grapes of luck” at midnight.
Then, they toast, sing, drink and dance all night.

10. Three Kings Day
On the afternoon of January 5th, the Three Kings do a parade on horses around the city giving away candy to the children.
That day kids go to sleep early. Then, the Three Kings go to their houses to leave presents.
The morning of January 6th, kids wake up early to open their presents.
At noon, the family eats together and exchanges gifts.
The traditional dessert is Roscón de Reyes (King’s Cake).
