1 Objectives of the Day Students will be able to
Identify, classify and/or draw: point, line, ray, segment, midpoint, intersection, bisect, plane, space, collinear, coplanar Define and identify parallel, perpendicular, and skew lines Apply the terms distance (between two points, two lines, or from a point to a line) and midpoint, bisect and bisector in regard to lines

2 Question of the Day Which statement about this line segment is true?
A  X is the midpoint of B  X is the midpoint of C  Y is the midpoint of D  Y is the midpoint of Use the figure below to identify the following A Two coplanar points B A line segment C How would you describe LM and JK

3 Foldable Notes Point – a location in space, no length, width or depth (point B, point C, point X) Line – series of points that extend in two opposite directions without end. No endpoints Collinear Points – on the same line Ray – part of a line consisting of one endpoint and all the points of the line on one side of the endpoint. Segment – part of line that is between two points and consists of all the points between them.

4 Foldable Notes Bisect – when a line, ray, segment or plane crosses a segment at its midpoint Lines and rays cannot have midpoints – infinitely long, so they cannot be bisected When a segment is bisected, its halves are congruent (have equal measure)

5 Foldable Notes Plane – a flat surface, that extends infinitely in all directions All points, lines, rays, segments are on a plane Coplanar points – on the same plane Coplanar lines – on the same plane Parallel lines Intersecting lines Space – the set of all points in three dimensions Points, lines, rays, planes Skew Lines – noncoplanar lines that are not parallel and do not intersect.

6 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Point a location in space, no length, width or depth point B point C point X B C X 6

7 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Line series of points that extend in two opposite directions without end. L or M N or 7

8 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Ray part of a line consisting of one endpoint and all the points of the line on one side of the endpoint. F E or D 8

9 Check for Understanding
Identify and label the figures below using proper notation L S 1) 2) M 3) 4) C A H G 9

10 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Segment part of line that is between two points and consists of all the points between them. J K L 10

11 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Distance How far apart two points are measured using a ruler or on a number line Always a positive number n inches (etc.) Or space on a number line P Q 11

12 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Midpoint A point that divides a segment into two congruent segments. J pointK K L 12

13 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Bisect (also called a perpendicular bisector) when a line, ray, segment or plane crosses a segment at its midpoint Forms a 90° angle where it intersects J K L 13

14 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Perpendicular Bisector A line which cuts a segment into two halves at 90° V T U W 14

15 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Plane a flat surface, that extends infinitely in all directions - All points, lines, rays, segments are on a plane - Coplanar points: on the same plane M and E are coplanar points P F E D M 15

16 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Coplanar Lines -on the same plane Two types: parallel and intersecting P B F E A D 16

17 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Parallel Lines Coplanar lines that never intersect always the same distance apart AB║CD or MB║FD MA║FC B M D A F C 17

18 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Perpendicular Lines Coplanar lines that intersect at a 90° angle V T U W 18

19 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Space - the set of all points in three dimensions - All points, lines, rays, planes 19

20 Geometry Vocabulary Refresher
KEY TERM DEFINITION ILLUSTRATION or EXAMPLE MATHEMATICAL NOTATION Skew -noncoplanar lines that are not parallel and do not intersect. 20

21 Use the figure to name each of the following.
The first letter names the endpoint. HO HO Name a segment by its endpoints. , HJ , and OI , KI , OJ , KI IK Horizontal line KI has several names. H, I, J, and K Name a point with a capital letter. , and JH , OK a. four points b. four different segments c. five other names for KI , KO , OK , IO , and OI d. five different rays 9-1

22 You are looking directly down into a wooden crate
You are looking directly down into a wooden crate. Name each of the following. MQ, NR, OS MP, OP, QT, ST MN, NO, QR, RS a. four segments that intersect PT b. three segments parallel to PT c. four segments skew to PT

23 Draw two intersecting lines
Draw two intersecting lines. Then draw a segment that is parallel to one of the intersecting lines. Use the lines on notebook or graph paper. First draw two lines that intersect. Then draw a segment that is parallel to one of the lines.

24 PRACTICE Name at least one of each of the terms A E F D B
When you finish, create another figure with points that includes each of the elements above

25 Independent Practice Name at least one of each of the terms J M K N L
