2 Bill of Rights The bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments of the United States Constitution. Pushed by Patrick Henry. Made as a protection to the powers of the federal government.

3 Tyrannical Government
The founding fathers and citizens were paranoid about an overarching, tyrannical, all-powerful government. Therefore, they established the Bill of Rights to ORIGINALLY PROTECT STATES FROM THE FEDERAL GOVENRMENT. SELECTIVE INCORPORATION WOULD LATER CHANGE THIS TO PROTECTING CITIZENS FROM THE FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS.

4 First Amendment Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion. Freedom of RAPPS. (religion, assembly, press, petition, speech.)

5 Right to bear arms. A well regulated militia
Second Amendment Right to bear arms. A well regulated militia

6 No quartering of troops in peacetime without consent of the owner.
Third Amendment No quartering of troops in peacetime without consent of the owner.

7 No illegal search and seizures. Need a search warrant.
Fourth Amendment No illegal search and seizures. Need a search warrant.

8 Fifth Amendment 5 parts to the 5th: “JPEGS” Double jeopardy Due Process Eminent Domain Grand Jury Self incrimination

9 Right to fair and speedy trial. Counsel. Witnesses No tricks!

10 Common law cases may be TRIAL BY JURY
Seventh Amendment Common law cases may be TRIAL BY JURY

11 No excessive bail No excessive fines No cruel and unusual punishment
Eighth Amendment No excessive bail No excessive fines No cruel and unusual punishment

12 You have more rights than what are stated in the Constitution.
Ninth Amendment You have more rights than what are stated in the Constitution.

13 Tenth Amendment Powers not given to the U.S. by the Constitution are “reserved” to the states or people. “Rights reserved to the states”
