3 Big ideas for today Students need to be able to take the learning from a structured and supportive environment (i.e., class) and apply it to the complexities of real-life environments. Every class conveys two lessons: discipline content and teaching method. Using active teaching and learning methods teaches students that with instructor guidance they can discover, analyze, and use knowledge on their own. Interactions that facilitate learning need not be limited to those between teachers and students.
