Introduction to CAD Course Syllabus for:
Teacher: Mr. Wayne Filus Phone: Office Location: C-13 Office Hours: 8:05 am to 3:15 pm Course Description: Introduction to the principles of drafting to include traditional and CAD techniques, drafting standards, multiview drawing, dimensioning, isometric drawing, sections, auxiliary views, mechanical working drawings, architectural working drawings, and 3D modeling basics. Text: Technical Drawing 101 by Smith and Ramirez, Prentice Hall Publishers (provided in powerpoint form) Tools/Materials: Technical Pencil ,45/30-60 degree triangle, digital caliper a combination scale, eraser, and a USB drive (optional). Prerequisites: None Course Rationale: Introduce students to the principals of technical drawing employing Computer-Aided-Drafting techniques. Describe and demonstrate the process of visualization and constructing multiview, isometric, and section drawings. Demonstrate and explain the theory and practice of dimensioning. Explain the importance of standards in the modern technical drawing environment.

Course Outcomes: After completing this course, the student will have demonstrated the ability to: Create free-hand multiview sketches. Prepare orthographic/multiview drawings using miter line construction techniques employing line conventions and line weights that comply with the ASME Y14.3M-1994 standard. Set-up, create, and print multiview CAD drawings. Dimension multiview drawings complying with the ASME Y standard. Dimension architectural drawings following accepted practices. Create section views using AutoCAD techniques complying with the ASME Y14.3M-1994 standard. Prepare isometric drawings with AutoCAD. Prepare auxiliary views with AutoCAD employing the ASME Y14.3M-1994 standard. Create, insert and edit blocks with AutoCAD. Use AutoCAD to prepare working drawings for a mechanical assembly complying with the ASME Y14.34M standard. Use AutoCAD to prepare working drawings (floor plan and elevations) for a small residence. Use AutoCAD/Inventor to create 3D models.

Grade Determination: 50% Drawing assignments, projects, etc. 30% Lab/Class participation 20% R & D, research papers, tests/quizess, homework, etc. Drawing Grading Guidelines: Minus 5-”Can’t build it” or Will be built it wrong” mistakes: omitting a required dimension, incorrect dimension value, omitting visible line(s) of a feature, omitting required notation, etc. Minus 2-Less serious mistakes-Omitting or improperly noting scale of drawing, leaving off hidden line, not marking a reference dimension with parentheses, omitting a hidden or center line, lines projected incorrectly, etc. Minus 1-Minor mistakes: misspelled words, LTscale problems (-5 max), no gaps in center-lines (-5 max), incorrect text height (-5 max), incorrect placement of dimensions, Incorrect dimension spacing (-5 max), improper dimension style settings (-5 max), incorrect line weight, etc.
