The property tax, which is also known as the ad valorem property tax, is a levy assessed on real property, such as houses, land, business inventory, and industrial plants. It is the most important source of tax revenue for local governments in Texas. Property Taxes

Tax Exemptions Local governments may grant property tax breaks, called exemptions, to certain categories of taxpayers, such as homeowners, elderly residents, and veterans with disabilities.

Homestead exemption The most common exemption is the homestead exemption, a property tax reduction granted homeowners on their principal residence. Note: The homestead exemption is ONLY for homeowners and ONLY for their principal residence. It does not apply to rent houses and business property.

Property Tax Rates State law sets a maximum property tax rate of $1.50 per $100 of valuation for general law cities and $2.50 per $100 for home rule cities. Most cities set tax rates well below the maximum rate allowed.
