Sewagram Sewagram is a village for service.
This was Karma Bhumi of Mahatama Gandhi & also well known by Gandhiji's ashram. Sewagram is a small village, located about 8 km from Wardha. Sewagram is home to the first rural medical college in India, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences.

Kasturba Health Society
The Kasturba Health Society was formed on September 11, 1962 to run the Kasturba Hospital. It now runs the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences and the Kasturba Hospital.

Kasturba Hospital The institute takes pride in the fact that its Kasturba Hospital, started in 1944, is the only hospital started by the Father of the Nation himself. It was started with bed hospital being upgraded to 972 beds, and offers tertiary care healthcare facilities to rural patients.

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences
In 1969, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, a medical school, was started and attached to the Kasturba Hospital. It is the first Rural Medical Institute in India established in 1969 as Gandhi centenary project under dynamic leadership, of late Dr. Sushila Nayar, Founder Director, M.G.I.M.S. Presently under the leadership of Shri Dhirubhai Mehta President, Kasturba Health Society, M.G.I.M.S. & is standing high in Indian Medical scenario imparting rural oriented medical education and living up to its own history and heritage.

History In 1964, the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust started Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM) training in the same hospital. Vasanti Behen (Miss Barbara Hartland), a trained nurse from London was entrusted with the responsibility of training the ANMs. The first batch of students was admitted in Late Mrs. Kamala Desikan, former Secretary of Kasturba Health Society, was amongst them.

In 1973 Kasturba Nursing School was established by the Kasturba Health Society, Sewagram.
A General Nursing and Midwifery training course of three and half years duration was started. In the beginning, ten students were admitted every six months and from 1977, 20 students were admitted yearly. Presently the school admits 40 students every year.

Kasturba Nursing College was started in the year 1997 in a spacious building constructed out of donation given by Urmiladevi Laxmiprasad Poddar. Foundation Stone of this building was laid by Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, when he was the Vice President of India in the year 1990 and he himself inaugurated the Nursing College building as the President of India in the year 1993.

In the year 1997 Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing (2 years degree programme) was started with intake capacity of 10 seats. It was affiliated to Nagpur University. 1998, this degree course has been affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. Intake capacity has been increased from 10 to 20 from the academic year

Basic B.Sc. Nursing (4 yrs. Degree course) was added in the year 2008 with an annual intake of 40.
M.sc. Nursing(2 yrs. PG Course) was started in the year 2011 with an intake capacity of 20 with four different specialities that is Medical surgical, Community Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing & Obstetrical & Gynaecological Nursing with five students in each speciality.

PHILOSOPHY Kasturba Nursing College, Sewagram, affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik subscribe to the University of which it is a part but also advocates Gandhian philosophy based on principles and philosophy of Kasturba Health Society, The faculty believes that nursing is an integral part of the health care delivery system and shares responsibility of working in collaboration with other allied professions for the attainment of optimum health for all members of the society.

Provide an education that is based on values of caring, and aims to help individuals to attain independence in self-care. prepare graduates to become exemplary citizen by adhering to code of ethics and professional conduct at all times in fulfilling personal, social and professional obligations. The Faculty believe in the development of Post Graduate programme in Nursing that is based on the application of principles of model of Health sciences, including research which can help in the improvement of the quality of Nursing education and practice in India.

Gandhian Principles The institute is unique in following the Gandhian Principles. Khadi All the students and staff wear khadi. It brings about a unique rich culture in the Institute. Shram Daan The staff and the students participate in shram daan. Community Prayer The staff and students have to participate in the community Prayer (Sarv Dharm Prathana) every Friday of the week Vegetarianism The institute follows a strict vegetarianism policy Prohibition Alcohol consumption is prohibited in the Institute.
