Monitor and Clarify: A Reading Strategy

What is clarify? Clarify is when you stop to make the sure the meaning of the text is clear to the reader. Clarify is when you use various strategies to figure out the meaning of the text.

What is monitor? Monitor is when you stop to make sure you understand what you are reading. Monitor is very similar to questioning but monitor focuses on making sure you understand.

When do you monitor/clarify a text?
As a reader, you can monitor/clarify a text DURING reading. As a reader, you can monitor/clarify a text AFTER reading. In other words, monitor/clarify the text during and after reading.

How do you monitor/clarify?
Ask yourself is what you are reading makes sense. If it does not, re-read it! Look at the pictures for clues. Keep reading for context clues. Ask a friend.

Questions to monitor/clarify a text?
What is happening in the story? What clues have led you to think that? Does that make sense? Does this text remind you of anything you already know?
