When speaking about their own writings, Brad was the man. He is the bands lyricist and he had to do vocals because nobody else would do it. Brad wrote many of his songs in high school when he was 15, often in the middle of his classes. When the band started touring outside of Escatawpa they still didn’t have a name. During a road trip to Foley, Alabama there lack of a title would come to an end. The three members where walking through the town and came across a sign on a building that had some letters fallen off and read “Doors Down”. Since there were only three of them they put a number three in front of the phrase and that is when they would start calling themselves 3 Doors Down.

Be Like That 0:13 As the riff is repeated the second time the bass guitarist softly plays a crescendo holding one note for about 20 seconds. The electric guitar is building up for verse number one in the song. 1:19 Bridge The singer slows way down holding notes longer singing two lines as the band continues the strong steady beat now being played by the drummer. The band together plays a diminuendo going into verse two. 2:20 Chorus The chorus plays again the same as the first time. The violin sound goes away until halfway through the chorus. The singer speeds up his tempo through the chorus. Song: Be Like That Artist: Brad Arnold, Chris Henderson Band: 3 Doors Down 00:00 Intro The beginning starts out with an acoustic guitar playing the riff. It repeats itself twice setting the song up for wide dynamics and a slow melody. 0:13 As the riff is repeated the second time the bass guitarist softly plays a crescendo holding one note for about 20 seconds. The electric guitar is building up for verse number one in the song. 0:20 Verse 1 The drum player plays at the end of the second repeated riff coming in soft playing a quick 16 count measure, but only using symbols softly as if he were playing a snare drum. The acoustic continues to play the repeated riff and the bass guitar plays more notes changing in octave and pitch to give the feel of solidarity. The singer begins in a high tenor key as all the instruments come together. There is a backup guitar playing a similar riff as the acoustic but more like an arch style mimicking the acoustic. At 0:40 the electric guitar comes into play and hits notes hard similar to the bass opening up but very instant setting up for the chorus. At this point it seems as if the song is being played in duple/simple meter. The drummer starts with a bass drum hit in sync with the electric guitar. 1:00 Chorus The buildup continues through the chorus all instruments are now playing the riff the acoustic has been playing all along. The singer continues to sing high tenor but with steady rhythm. The drum player continues its soft rhythm until about 1:19 where he hits the drums with some dissonance before going into a steady beat. 1:19 Bridge The singer slows way down holding notes longer singing two lines as the band continues the strong steady beat now being played by the drummer. The band together plays a diminuendo going into verse two. 1:40 Verse 2 Going into the second verse the band plays the same as in the first verse as the electric guitar holding it’s last note way out. The bass and electric continue this long note posture playing in harmony. At 1:53 a synthesizer is being used were it sounds like a violin is playing its own melody almost as if they were trying to use a little polyphony in this verse. From 2:12 to 2:20 the band plays a lot of dissonance blurring the melody. 2:20 Chorus The chorus plays again the same as the first time. The violin sound goes away until halfway through the chorus. The singer speeds up his tempo through the chorus. 2:40 Coda At the beginning of the coda the singer repeats the bridge. And at 3:00 the band plays diminuendo again to move into the chorus. The band again crescendos to repeat the chorus at 3:20 and plays a very upbeat version of the chorus and then repeats in the same manner but in the last phrase of the chorus instead “ what would I do” the singer replaces the word” what” with “lord” and gives it a begging feeling. And then he finishes off with him singing about falling in again. All instruments stop immediately at 4:16 and hold there last notes out to 4:27 4:27 End

Here Without You 0:00 Intro The intro starts with an acoustic guitar playing a soft melody. The riff is played once and then goes straight into the song. 1:26 Verse 2 In the second verse the band continues the same music as was in verse one and the chorus. Now all the instruments are playing. You can barely hear the bass rhythm player as his notes play on rhythm with the drummer. At 1:53 there is a sudden change. 1:54 Chorus This chorus is sung the same as the first chorus was sung. The band plays louder as they reach their peak of the crescendo. 2:20 Bridge The band hits there peak in volume and the singer is really feeling it as he sings different words as the chorus but has the same music. The last note the vocalist sings is held out as the band continues to play. With him doing this leads the band into closing out the song. Song: Here Without You Writer: Brad Arnold, Todd Harrell, Chris Henderson, and Matt Roberts Band: 3 Doors Down 0:00 Intro The intro starts with an acoustic guitar playing a soft melody. The riff is played once and then goes straight into the song. 0:06 Verse 1 The first verse starts with the singer beginning with a high tenor sound singing semi soft like he is putting all his feelings out on the table. At about 0:34 a cello sound is being produced with a synthesizer for a low mellow tone to play counterpoint to the riff that is still being played. 0:47 Chorus All instruments take a 16th of a rest and all start playing together here a violin sound is being played in harmony with the cello. The drummer also begins taping his symbols lightly playing whole notes. This pause and then immediate playing shows the start of the chorus. The band continues playing the melodies and soft beats as the singer continues with the chorus. On the vocalists last word “me” he holds the note out and as he hits this note so does the drummer as he continues with a steady duple/simple meter. As the drummer starts with the vocalists last note a symphony of violins sound in the background still playing in harmony with the cello. 1:26 Verse 2 In the second verse the band continues the same music as was in verse one and the chorus. Now all the instruments are playing. You can barely hear the bass rhythm player as his notes play on rhythm with the drummer. At 1:53 there is a sudden change. Through the song it sounds sad like in a minor mode but at 1:53 during the chorus it lightens up and sounds as if the band has switched to a major mode. 3:00 Coda The band plays a quick 8 note diminuendo signaling the end of the song. They continue playing a slight diminuendo as the drummer puts emphasis on his symbols showing the slow of tempo and the celebratory style of pain the vocalist is putting across in the sound of his voice. At 3:43 the vocalist and band end at the same time holding the last note out to the end. 3:59 End

At about 0:40 the band changes it melody playing a higher pitch signaling the chorus. 0:51 Chorus The tempo picks up and the guitars go from pizzicato style to playing chords. At this point in the chorus you can tell that they are playing a Triple/simple meter and continue strong playing forte throughout the chorus. 1:20 Verse 2 The beginning of verse begins with a small guitar solo lasting through 1:32 and the vocalist makes his transition to a slower tone for the verse. The band plays the same music as the vocalist continues but at the end of the verse but this time there is no change in the melody the only thing that leads you into the chorus is the drummer again picking up the tempo. 1:56 Chorus The band plays the same as the first chorus in a forte manner and is in triple/simple meter. The last note of the chorus is held out as it leads into another guitar solo. At 2:48 the drummer plays some dissonance in a diminuendo manner as the guitar starts again for his big solo. At 3:10 the guitar hits his lowest note and plays a crescendo overlapping the vocalist going into the coda. 3:13 Coda The singer finishes by singing the chorus one more time as the band plays the same as in the previous choruses. Many of their songs have been from real experiences together as band members, and others were from them not being together when they would take a break from recording. Over the years they have had four albums in the top ten two of those which were number one albums. I will be focusing my attention on three of the hit singles from these albums

In an interview with songfacts Brad Arnold Said the following: ““When I'm Gone”...it's really kind of about when I'm gone. And it's asking a question, just please love me when I'm gone. And not just like when I'm dead and gone, but when I'm gonna come back. But at the same time it's about unconditional love. It's a lot of different statements, it's asking of the person in that song. And it's like the fulfillment of those different needs for every situation that it mentions. So I guess that song is about needing someone to be there for you unconditionally, and when you're gone.”(Songfacts, When I’m gone)
