Annemarie, Ellen, and Kirsti were stopped by the soldiers for running. What advice did Mrs. Rosen give the girls about behaving outside? The advice Mrs. Rosen gave the girls about behaving outside was to walk a different way to school and make sure that the soldiers didn’t have a reason to remember their faces. How did Annemarie show her dislike of the German soldiers occupying her country? Annemarie showed her dislike of the German soldiers by making fun of one of them. She said that he looked like a giraffe. Why isn’t Kirsti afraid of the soldiers? Kirsti isn’t afraid of the soldiers because she doesn’t remember a time that they weren’t there. The soldiers are a part of her everyday life, so to her them being there is normal. Why do you think the “Free Danes” newspaper was important in Denmark during the war years? Chapter 2 Questions What happened to Annemarie’s sister, Lise?
Annemarie’s sister, Lise, died in an accident. Why does Peter visit the Johansen’s? Peter visits the Johansen’s because he was engaged to Lise. Peter also visited the Johansen’s to bring them The Free Danes. What are some hardships faced by the Danish people because of the war? Some of the hardships that were faced by the Danish people were that they did not have sugar, butter, coffee, or tea. Why didn’t the Danish army fight the Germans when they invaded Denmark? The Danish army didn’t fight the Germans when they invaded Denmark because Denmark was a small country, too many Danish citizens would have died, and they did not have many soldiers. Chapter 3 – Questions What did Annemarie realize about her friend Ellen after Peter’s visit? After Peter’s visit, Annemarie realized that her friend Ellen and her family are in trouble, because they are Jewish and the Germans have begun to torment the Jews. How did Annemarie know the Hirsch’s were not gone on a holiday? Annemarie knew that the Hirsch’s weren’t gone on a holiday because no one had been on a holiday since the war started. What items were being rationed? Why? Sugar, butter, tea, coffee, electricity, and rubber have been rationed because the items were needed for the war effort. What happened to Mrs. Hirsch? Mrs. Hirsch’s shop was closed by the Germans because her family was Jewish. Why did the girls always take a different route to school? The girls took a different route to school so that the German soldiers wouldn’t recognize them.

Chapter 4 Questions How did the Germans find out the names of the Danish Jews? The Germans found out the names of the Danish Jews by taking the synagogue list of all the Jews. Why was Kirsti upset when she and her mother returned from shopping? What was Ellen’s solution to the problem? Kirst was upset when she and her mother returned from shopping because she had gotten fish shoes. Ellen’s solution was to have her father paint the shoes black with his ink. What were the “booms and lights in the sky” on Kirsti’s birthday? “The booms and lights in the sky” on Kirsti’s birthday was the Danish fleet being destroyed by the Danish Navy, so that the Germans could not use them in the war. Why was the Tivoli Gardens important to the Danes of Copenhagen? Tivoli Gardens was important to the Danes of Copenhagen because it was a cultural place where they could go, have fun, and relax. Why would Annemarie and Ellen need to pretend that they are sisters? Annemarie and Ellen would need to pretend that they were sisters to protect Ellen from the Nazis soldiers.
