Replace this logo with your own appropriate logo Insert the title of your session here NOTE TO TRAINERS This slide pack is designed to provide you with sufficient information to facilitate an initial training session on the new Programme. It is not a script for you to follow word for word, as we appreciate you are more experienced than that. However we also recognise that the new Programme is new for all of us, as this is the first time that Girlguiding has created something in this innovative, collaborative, exciting way. So you are very welcome to use these presenter notes as the basis for a script if you feel that is helpful. The slides have been designed as a visual cue for discussions, as visual slides enable learners to think for themselves, rather than read ahead on and disengage from learning. You may not be used to using notes like this, so perhaps a practice run through with fellow Trainers will get you familiar with the materials. You can print these notes out or use presenters view on powerpoint to access the notes during your session. All of the information contained in these slides can be found in the our Journey section of the website and we would encourage leaders to regularly check these pages for the up to date information, along with their Guiding magazine. What is important is that all of the points on these slides are shared and discussed with the leaders attending your training session. Whilst you may translate the scripting into your local vernacular, please do remain consistent to the messaging, to ensure consistency across all our Countries, Regions & Branches. The first 5 slides are in the standard Girlguiding template format, whereas slides 6 onwards use the “Our Journey” theme you will have seen before. If you are conducting a briefing rather than a training, feel free to hide slides 1- 5 Thank you. Have a great session. 2 Aim To introduce leaders to the new Programme for all sections that is being launched in Summer 2018

3 Objectives By the end of the session participants will have:
Refreshed their understanding of how the new Programme has been developed as a result of extensive consultation through the Being Our Best project, which identified a number of areas for change in our existing programme Familiarised themselves with the components of the new Programme and how they fit together for all sections Recognised the achievements of the project to date and understand what work is still left to complete prior to launch in Summer 2018 Identified the next steps for their personal journey towards the new programme

4 What Does a Girlguiding Leader Do?
_NC_ _R_G_ D_V_L_P _V_L_ _T_ L_ST_N _NSP_R_ PR_CT_C_L _DV_C_ S_PP_RT _MP_TH_S_ C_L_BR_T_ Let’s be honest - there are lots and lots of answers to this question - but, for a bit of fun, can you identify these 9 things that a typical Girlguiding Leader does? Reveal answers on next slide

5 What Does a Girlguiding Leader Do?
ENCOURAGE DEVELOP EVALUATE LISTEN INSPIRE PRACTICAL ADVICE SUPPORT EMPATHISE CELEBRATE Our new programme supports all of these actions – and is designed to give us the time to do thsse (and more!) things even better We are on a journey and today we will look at that journey. We will explore and question, we will engage and think, we will start to think how this will impact you, your unit and your girls.

6 We’re Going on a Journey …
An introduction to the new Girlguiding Programme

7 Let’s get started This video is a useful place to start our thinking about the new Programme. Let’s watch this together and whilst you watch, take a note of any questions that come to mind, as we can discuss those as we go through today’s session. WATCH VIDEO TRAINER TO FACILITATE ANY IMMEDIATE QUESTIONS (please maintain positive messaging and noting most questions will be covered in the rest of this session, and some questions we simply will not yet know the answers to, as this is a new way of developing, but those questions will be answered over time) Feel free to share this with your Leadership teams who are not attending this learning. There are a lot of resources available to you on the Girlguiding website to help you with the new Programme. Do regularly check in there for support as we take this journey together.

8 How did we start our journey?
‘Being Our Best’ strategy consultation and a review of our current programme told us we needed to update our programme to make it fit for the 21st Century Not enough high-quality activities designed for unit meetings More activities focused on teamwork, friendship and craft than any other theme Core programme themes inconsistent Programme materials don’t reflect a balanced and varied programme Not enough challenge for older girls in each section Some activities reinforce stereotypes When thinking about doing something new, it is important to ensure there is clear evidence for the development. Girlguiding have not undertaken this mammoth project without good reason. The results of the Being Our Best consultation and a programme review approved by the Board of Trustees in 2015 have been fundamental in shaping this project. There’s been an enormous amount of internal and external research carried out, including the Girls Attitudes Survey, research into 30 other youth organisations, two consultation panels and a Lead Volunteer and Task and Finish Group involved too. Alongside this, the HQ staff team has also carried out an audit of all current programme materials, measuring activities against a series of quality benchmarks, the Five Essentials and our six core values, as well as looking at badge and resources sales. Some of the key feedback is shown on this slide. Girls and Leaders called for a greater focus on adventure, in all its many forms – as well as asking for more ways to take part in social action and to develop important skills for life. Volunteers told us that they felt strongly that our core programme should bridge between sections and better support transition.

9 Why is this a problem? Not enough high-quality materials to run unit meetings = links to volunteer recruitment and retention Unbalanced/not enough challenge/inconsistent themes = links to girl recruitment and retention Some activities could be more inclusive = links to girl and volunteer recruitment and retention Programme renewal is crucial in helping us to achieve our Mission and to Be Our Best, with close links to our current focus on membership growth and retention. Whilst volunteers highlighted many current strengths in our programme, they also told us that activities don’t always stretch older girls and that the changes in core themes across sections makes transition harder. Feedback also suggests we need to make sure the programme is challenging and appealing for ALL girls – and that it is always underpinned by the 5 Essentials. The programme audit also demonstrated how some longer standing activities can reinforce traditional stereotypes, which may be a barrier to recruiting girls and volunteers from diverse communities. You will also be aware that we have some very long waiting lists in areas and we need to work on getting those reduced. Lower numbers of girls in Guiding means both lower revenues and lower opportunities for all. We are all responsible for recruitment and retention. Programme renewal will help us all with that, both making it easier for new leaders coming in and making it more attractive to girls today. Everyone benefits from a new Programme.

10 Our New Programme And here it is, the new Programme, at least as far as we have currently got it. DISCUSSION: What are you excited about for the new Programme? What would you like to know more about (reassure that their concerns will be covered in this session, and if not today, then as soon as the answers are available)

11 What can you look forward to?
More high quality resources for Leaders to give girls the programme they want and need Less preparation work for Leaders More girls and adults will feel there’s a place in Girlguiding for them Supporting membership growth and retention Girls will know that we’ve listened QUESTION: Do you recognise these symbols from Being Our Best? ELICIT Excellence, Capacity, Access, Voice We in Girlguiding are all focused to our Being our Best goal. We are also a movement. Changing the Programme is not new to us, even though changing it in this collaborative, slow roll out way is. Improving our Programme is something we have always done periodically, as part of our commitment to continue to change as the lives of girls changes. And although this is the biggest overhaul in decades, this programme renewal will help us do the same. We all believe in the power of Guiding to change lives – we all know that Guiding is so much more than an after-school activity or a babysitting service.  And I know too, that we all believe in putting girls at the heart of what we do in guiding. And so this is why it’s the right time for us to take a bold step-change and create a programme fit for the 21st century and beyond. One that offers girls the skills and opportunities to fulfil their potential and also one that supports and truly values the vital contribution of our volunteers. Today’s world is one that is, of course, very different to when Guiding first started over 100 years ago, but one where our core values still hold true Note to trainer: if you are able to talk about membership growth statistics here please do. Examples could be numbers of girls on local waiting lists or you could focus on wanting to retain the girls already in your units.

12 It’s not all change though!
And so, it’s not all change! We have got lots of great Programme ideas to build upon already as well as a rich successful heritage – and no one wants to lose that. So, lots of the new programme will feel familiar. ELICIT onto a flipchart: What is staying? (encourage all the following 6 points from Leaders) Keeping Promise and Laws, the beating heart of our movement Continue to follow the Guiding Method, based on 5 Essentials There will still be badges and awards to celebrate achievements And there will still be flexibility for each unit to make it your own. The core programme hasn’t been designed to fill every single meeting – there’ll still be space for traditions, games, parties and trips, events with your District or Division, and for the excitement of the first sleepover, holiday or camp! And most important of all – we are keeping the FUN! This will not feel like school as it is learning by doing!

13 Cross Sectional Consistency
One journey for everyone Cross Sectional Consistency Six Activity Themes We are all following the same 6 themes – from Rainbows through to the new 14 – 18 year olds group - with age-appropriate activities There will be a mixture of Unit Meeting Activities, Skills Builders and Interest Badges for every section to enjoy This will make it easier for our girls as they transition from one section to the next A combination of activities from each of the themes will ensure a balanced and varied programme ELICIT: Do we know what the six themes are? Click to review answers on next slides

14 Six activity themes Know Myself Girls getting to know who they are,
and their role in Girlguiding and the wider world. Eg Guiding Traditions Express Myself visual arts, crafts and design, performing arts different types of communication Eg Storytelling Be Well Helping girls look after their own and others’ physical and mental well-being. Eg Resilience, first aid As you’ll have read on the website and in guiding magazine…The new Programme will be structured around six core themes which are: Know myself: girls getting to know who they are, and their role in Girlguiding and the wider world. Eg Guiding Traditions Express myself: visual arts, crafts and design, performing arts different types of communication Eg Storytelling Be well: helping girls look after their own and others’ physical and mental well-being. Eg Resilience, first aid Have adventures: girls exploring the outdoors and nature, having opportunities to visit unfamiliar places and be adventurous eg survival skills, camping, Take action: empowering girls to make a difference and use their voice to help their local community and the wider world. Eg doing something in your local town to contributing to a global campaign Skills for my future: providing the building blocks for girls to become independent and successful in life eg DIY The themes will continue through EVERY component of EVERY section. Why? Members have asked for consistency to make it easier for girls to transition from one section to the next, By delivering a combination of activities on each of the six themes, Leaders can be sure that girls are receiving a broad and varied programme.

15 Six activity themes Have Adventures
Girls exploring the outdoors and nature, having opportunities to visit unfamiliar places and be adventurous eg survival skills, camping Take Action Empowering girls to make a difference and use their voice to help their local community and the wider world. We are consulting on how we make it as easy as possible for Leaders to record what girls in their unit have done. FACILITATE DISCUSSION: These look exciting for the girls. Have you any thoughts? (Take questions, answer positively and honestly, and do not be afraid to say we don’t yet have all the answers. We are starting this thinking early to raise all these great questions and get answers before it launches in 2018)

16 Delivering the programme
In the unit, girls will take part in … Girls will also do some things on their own away from the unit … Unit Meeting Activities Skills Builders – core skills, group activities Local Unit Activities There will be space within the new programme for units to include activities and challenges that they have always enjoyed doing Interest Badges Skills Builders – optional individual activities Delivery of the Programme will feel similar to how you deliver Good Guiding today. You will do activities in your unit meetings. You will do those in small groups The girls will also do things individually You will still do you regular pancake day race, singing at the care home, or whatever it is that your unit has a tradition of doing as part of your programme. These all are part of the Five Essentials we know already. Let’s take a look at each of these elements in more detail, as we begin to get more familiar with them.

17 Unit Meeting Activities
‘Pick up and go’ activities Designed for unit meetings to help Leaders to deliver a balanced programme Available as activity cards Facilitate girl-led guiding Easy to add new activities in the future Let’s start with unit meeting activities – or ‘UMAs’ - which will form the bread and butter of unit meetings. HOLD UP UMA CARDS Each unit main contact should have had a set of these. If you have not see them already get in touch with your unit main contact and spend some time with them. As you look at them you may recognize some of the activities. This is a reminder of how this new Programme has been collaboratively put together, with great ideas from Leaders up and down the country. The UMAs are ready-to-go group activity cards will vary in length and style, with lots of games, experiments, role plays and more. The activities are specific to each section and are directed at girls to encourage them to lead. They’re designed for small groups and whole units and can be used in a mix-and-match form based on the time you have and what girls choose to do. The activities will dramatically reduce the amount of time Leaders need to spend planning their unit meetings, leaving more time to enjoy with the girls, and can be used alongside all their existing favourites too. It’ll be easy for Girlguiding to regularly update and refresh UMAs, bringing in exciting new topics on a regular basis, to maintain the interest of both volunteers and girls. Keep suggesting your favourite ideas into the Programme team.

18 Here are some example Unit Meeting Activities from each of the sections

20 Skills Builders Progressive, staged badges matched to ability
Core skills we believe all girls need inside and outside Girlguiding Two Skill Builders per Activity Theme, so there’s a choice Each Skill Builder has six stages – with a mix of group activities and optional independent activities Focus on girls working in small groups The skill builders will enable girls to build key skills within each Activity Theme throughout their membership. Every skills builder will have six progressive stages with a badge attached, each requiring a more complex level of skill than the last one. The topics covered are those that girls identified in consultation as key skills they wanted to gain which are essential both inside and outside Girlguiding, so things like Leadership, First Aid, and so on. Some of the skills builder activities will be completed by a girl independently, and some activities will be for small groups to complete within a unit setting. Those designed for unit meetings will be supported with activity cards, like the unit meeting activities. 21 Interest Badges #BadgeGoals
Support all girls to try new things and expand their horizons Will consist of 3 clauses, and are designed to be as accessible as possible with minimal adult input, cost or resources Section-specific badges Regularly reviewed to keep them fresh and relevant Linked to the Activity Themes #BadgeGoals Whilst we don’t know what these badges look like, or even what subjects they will cover at the moment, what we do know is that from the Being Our Best consultation with volunteers, there was a clear appetite to encourage girls to build their confidence and sense of empowerment, encouraging them to be proactive about what they want to do in Girlguiding. So there will now be interest badges for every section – including Rainbows and section - to support girls to try new things and widen their experiences through self-directed activity. Girls will complete interest badges themselves, independently of their unit, and we hope that this will empower and motivate them to shape their own journey throughout their membership of Girlguiding. We know that this approach may be new for some but we're keen to help girls learn that if they want to achieve something it takes a bit of motivation and effort. That said, we also want to make the interest badges as accessible as possible, so they'll be shorter than the current interest badges, be designed to have minimal support from adults (depending on age) and be open to girls with limited access to resources or money. They'll be section specific, which will mean we can tailor each badge directly to the girls of that age group and will be regularly reviewed and updated so that we can respond to the changing interests and tastes of girls or young women, making it easier to keep the programme fresh and exciting for years to come! You may have seen and got involved in the collection of ideas for Interest Badges at #BadgeGoals It has been great to see so many people getting involved in sharing your girl’s ideas for badges. Keep it going!

22 Activity Theme Awards WE NEED YOUR HELP before 20th October
Once a girl has completed a selection of unit meeting activities, skills builders and badges, she will earn activity theme awards that recognise her effort and commitment on a theme, for example a Be Well award or a Know Myself Award. This is where we need your help, and your fellow Leader’s help. We are currently consulting on how many of each of these things a girl in each section would need to do. We need your help to find the right balance - want to make this award achievable, but also value it as a something that takes a bit of effort and commitment from girls – so that achieving it means something. Send in your thoughts by October 20th to (FLIPCHART: write this address onto a flipchart, to encourage Leaders to write it down) Trainer note: if you are delivering this after 20th October please delete this from the powerpoint and let the group know that consultations have taken place.

23 Section Top Awards WE NEED YOUR HELP before 20th October
We also need support with the End of Section Awards. Let’s take a look at those, and as you do, think about what they should be known as. Send in your thoughts by October 20th to (FLIPCHART: write this address onto a flipchart, to encourage Leaders to write it down) Trainer note: if you are delivering this after 20th October please delete this from the powerpoint and let the group know that consultations have taken place.

24 Skills For My Future Award
Rainbow Top Award Brownie Top Award Guide 14-18 Section Top Award Know Myself Award Express Myself Award Be Well Award Have Adventures Award Take Action Award Skills For My Future Award Section Top Awards Earning all six theme awards in a section will be a really special achievement Girls may also need to complete an additional challenge to get these top awards Earning all six theme awards in a section will be a really special achievement We are still thinking about the right name for this award, and we’re also currently thinking about what else a girl might need to do to achieve the Top Award, eg an additional challenge. We will be able to tell you more about this once a decision has been made at the end of the year.

25 Celebrations of membership and success are important to Girlguiding
Celebrations of membership and success are important to Girlguiding. Some of you will have Badges celebrating your commitment to our wonderful organisation. ASK: Anyone here with a long service award? (Celebrate and clap the longest server. Welcome profusely those new Leaders too, they are all equally important!) We will celebrate our girls’ anniversaries too. Girls will receive badges throughout their journey in every section These will celebrate a girls’ membership and commitment to Guiding We don’t have a name for these badges yet, but will let you know when we do.

26 Our journey so far… SUCCESSES
On track with overall project plans Record levels of member involvement so far Unit Meeting Activities tested by 738 units/11,308 girls Over 10,000 individuals in Parent / Members testing New system of content co-creation with members Expert partnerships The following slides are a message directly to you from the Programme Team. This work is very transparent, collaborative and the Programme Team welcome all your thoughts and ideas. This is a HUGE programme of work – not just the new programme content but also member comms to what’s on the website, from press to learning and development…on track with all of them so far! We are testing EVERY activity created with girls and Leaders – whether the activity has been submitted by Programme Team, Leaders or girls. The first 160 unit meeting activities are in proofing stage now, having been tested on over members. Programme Team are acting on feedback to tweak EVERY activity – whether that’s to make the instructions clearer, make it safer and inclusive, move it to a more appropriate section or ramp up the FUN! And in some cases they’ve completely rewritten activities and sent them out again for more testing. We know there are questions about our timescales - testing at the end of terms, during exam time, outdoor activities during the winter etc. To be on track to launch in summer 2018 Programme Team need to test 70 activities a month this year - this is why the Team are having to keep going and work so quickly BUT if a unit can’t test on one occasion, they just go back into the pool for next time - if units haven’t heard yet, we are working our way through thousands of members in the testing pool so please be patient.

27 “Our quietest Rainbow who never puts her hand up and said something – TWICE! We were so pleased we could burst!” “I think for the ease of the activity, it might be more suited to Brownies and Guides, although The Senior Section girls did enjoy it.” “The main issue was the very low temperature and wind!” “Pleasantly surprised by the responses from our girls in the feedback! It wasn't what I was expecting!” Here is some feedback from Leaders involved in testing… This is the sort of positively you can hope for when using the new Programme. Have a go. Try out the Unit Meeting Activities. Ask the girls what they think.

28 Co-created activity example
Every activity: Guiding ethos and value Clear aim and outcomes Educational approach Appropriate pitch Clarity of instructions Accuracy of information Relevant to girls of today Accessible As part of the process we’re also asking everyone – volunteers and girls - to share their favourite activities so that the new programme truly is a collaborative effort with members and the best that it can possibly be! Here’s an example of a brilliant activity idea…every idea submitted, whether by staff, volunteers or girls, is sent out for testing and only the best ideas make the final cut.

29 Press campaign To raise public awareness and change perceptions – growth Consultation – we’ll use the best ideas! Amazing response in the media: 20+ national press hits – including The Independent, The Times, The Telegraph, BBC news online and Huffington Post 500+ ‘mentions’ of Girl Guides on national and local TV & Radio Reports on Radio 4’s Today, BBC Breakfast and BBC 1 o’clock news Volunteer interviewed on Sky news Coverage across all BBC Local Radio stations 30+ different spokespeople interviewed #badgegoals trending on Twitter Our press campaign which launched on 18th May 2017, had two aims…To raise public awareness of the fact that we are changing as the lives of girls change…but also a mass consultation exercise – what would inspire non-members to join, or encourage their daughters to join, Girlguiding?

30 The press both in print and online has been very interested in the new Programme

31 Our journey so far… CHALLENGES
"Why are we even getting girls to develop their leadership skills?” Ongoing member engagement - a new way of communicating with members The review of The Senior Section Feedback received so far Mapping out the next steps “There are aspects of the change that I am not a fan of but  recent communications have put my mind at rest” “While the uncertainty is frustrating, I am pleased that you’re taking the time to get this decision correct” Of course, there have been some challenges too – as you would expect with a project of this scale. Firstly, the approach to the programme renewal is a new way of working - sharing as we go along rather than at the end of the process. This is really helping to build excitement and momentum but does mean that we don’t always have all the detail we are being asked for – it’s not a secret, just don’t have all the answers yet! This approach is because of the recent member comms review and we are listening to feedback and refining approach all the time!

32 Reviewing The Senior Section
14-18 year-olds New unit-based section – programme consistent with other sections, and new name, brand and uniform Colour combination will remain as teal and grey New name expected to be announced by the end October 2017; with the new logo in January 2018 New uniform will be available to buy from July 2019 (TBC) 18-25 year-olds The future of the organisation Access to some of the current Senior Section challenges (i.e. Queens Guide) Will be supported outside of a unit-based sectional environment Plans will be formalised by Spring 2018 One area where we’ve received a lot of member feedback has been regarding the change to The Senior Section. We’ve have received a wide range of feedback –with many positive responses to the proposed age changes and the creation of the new section, as well as some concerns and worries about the impact on membership. (see for latest updates) Current Senior Section members aged 18+ can stay with their Senior Section Units until Summer All new Senior Section members should be made aware that the age group is changing As we know Rangers is a popular name, our legal team are committed to pursuing the possibility of using it nationally again. We’re continuing to work on options for brilliant alternative names for the section, and if we are able to use the name Rangers again, we’ll include it as an option alongside the other names to choose from A new piece of work is also being scoped to look at the offer –we’ll have more detail about how this will work and other practicalities by early 2018 What we are clear about, based on the Senior Section review from 2014 and other consultation, is that for the vast majority of girls, turning 18 means that their lives and commitments change significantly. Large numbers of Senior Section members and Leaders told us that meeting regularly with such a broad age range didn’t work particularly well for either younger or older girls. The changes to the age ranges will still stand – and our new programme activities are being written for year-olds. But we know that guiding is a safe and nurturing pace for girls to grow into adulthood, so we are really excited about the chance this gives us to strengthen our support for members in this age range. We want to create a package of opportunities that fully aligns with the vision we have set out in Being Our Best

33 Getting to our destination
Timeframe Planned activity July 2017 Free taster packs of Unit Meeting Activities sent out to Unit Main Contacts End 2017 More information available on costs Baden Powell Challenge Award changes confirmed March 2018 A full suite of training material available for Trainers to use July 2018 Launch of new core programme for all sections During academic year Transition phase By the start of academic year End of current programme use What are the next steps? Core information will continue to be released as it is agreed – and this will be shared on the website, via Guiding magazine and through the dedicated e-newsletters. The new programme does not start until the start of the 2018/19 academic year – and we have a year of transition before the old programme is phased out by the start of the 2019/20 academic year.

34 Using the Free Taster Unit Meeting Activity Packs
Mix and match with current programme activities Hold dedicated evenings just on the new programme Get together with other units for an evening/day filled with activities from the new programme Use activities from the next section to support girls preparing to transition Here are some ideas for you to try in preparation to the launch of the new Programme. ELICIT: What will you do next after today’s training to prepare for the new Programme?

35 Help us to bust some myths!
Please keep delivering and buying the current programme – it’s not being retired until 2019! Uniforms for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and adults aren’t changing as part of programme renewal We will be supporting Leaders as much as we can to make girl-led guiding a reality WE NEED YOU – member input is crucial! It would be also be great if you as Leaders could be our local champions and advocates for programme renewal and help us to share some key messages with members. While this journey is happening we still want to make sure our current members get the great guiding experience so we are encouraging everyone to keep delivering the current programme and buying programme materials until you are ready to transition to the new programme. A 5-year-old Rainbow who joins in September 2017 will be leaving that section in Sept 2019 which means she could spend her whole time in Rainbows enjoying the current programme. Uniforms are not being changed as part of this project (apart from for new section) so they are still a great investment for girls and leaders now and in the future We are really focusing on how to best support leaders to deliver great guiding – but know we need a programme that is flexible enough that you and your girls can make it your own to suit the needs of your unit. Not only are we interested in volunteers’ ideas, we NEED them to make the programme as good as possible – we want our members to be part of this journey so please encourage everyone to ensure their details are correct on new GO so they are getting all the latest updates.

36 Get involved! Keep checking our web hub:
Comments? Queries? DISCUSSION: What final thoughts do you have at this stage? Thank you everyone for your interest in the new Programme. This discussion does not end here. Keep getting involved. Keep trying things out. Keep suggesting what you like and would like to see more of.
