Laws Governing Driver Licenses
A motorist who operates a vehicle must always carry license, registration, insurance Altering a driver license or showing an altered license – loss of driving privilege- $1000 fine and/or up to 6 months in jail. Getting a license illegally- $200-$500 and/or of jail. Any change of address must be reported to the MVC within 1 week Any name change must be reported to the MVC within 2 weeks

The Graduated Driver License
New Jersey implemented a multi-stage driver licensing system knows as the Graduated Driver License (GDL) Program. The system gradually introduces driving privileges to first time drivers, extends their practice driving time and requires a minimum age of 18 in order to receive an unrestricted, basic driver license. All GDL fines $100

Special Learner Permit Restrictions (minimum age 16)
No driving between 11:01pm and 5:00 am No cell phones, video games, etc. Must be accompanied in the front seat by an adult supervising driver who is at least 21 years of age and who possesses a valid NJ driver license and has a minimum of 3 years driving experience. Passengers – supervising driver, any parent or guardian, one additional passenger. Everyone must wear seatbelt.

Step 3 & 4: Probationary License
Must have completed 6 months of supervised driving Pass the MVC’s road test Must be 17 years old Pass the 6 point ID requirements (step 4) Practice driving unsupervised (at least 1 year)

Reasons for Road Test Rejection
Improper, expired or no inspection sticker. Lack of examiner access to foot brake or parking break. Any defect or condition that affects the safe operation of the test vehicles. See page 34 of your manual for the list of possible defects or conditions. Failure: wait 2 weeks!
