1 Cells and cellular transport

2 What the state wants you to know
Cell Objectives State standard - HS-LS1-3. Provide evidence that homeostasis maintains internal body conditions through both body-wide feedback mechanisms and small-scale cellular processes. Cellular processes include (a) passive transport and active transport of materials across the cell membrane to maintain specific concentrations of water and other nutrients in the cell and (b) the role of lysosomes in recycling wastes, macromolecules, and cell parts into monomers.

3 Unpacking the standard
Students should be able to: 1. Correctly label a eukaryotic cell. 2. Correctly label a nerve cell. 3. Describe the job of the cell the parts identified in the eukaryotic cell. Identify the cell wall, chloroplast in a plant cell. 4. Distinguish between plant, animal and bacterial cells. Compare and contrast the similarities and difference between these three cell types. 5. Identify prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells 6. Describe osmosis of water in and out of the cell. Define and use the terms hypotonic, hypertonic and Isotonic correctly. 7. Describe the process of diffusion of molecules into and out of the cell. 8. Describe active and passive transport systems. Give an example of each. 9. Describe the activation of a nerve impulse and how they transmit a message in the human system.

4 How will we learn the first three standards?
Assignments : Look up the cell parts listed on the hand out given to you in class. Watch the video to review the function of the cells parts. Write your answers on the sheet provided. Color and label a eukaryotic animal cell and plant cell. Color and label the nerve cell picture as well.

5 Jobs that require cell knowledge
I have assigned you a Newsela article. Log into Newsela and the click on your assignments. Read the article. Complete the quiz when your are done. Please answer this question in your notebook regarding the article. Would you be interested in working in a lab?   Biology Class code (38XSJJ)

6 Watch the cell Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URUJD5NEXC8

7 Here is a really cool view of cellular processes. https://www. youtube

8 The inner life of a cell

9 Compare and Contrast the following: 1) Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells 2) Animal cells and plant cells Create a Venn diagram that compares the these two ideas. Put those notes in your notebook with the title above.(Use a separate page for each.) Leave space for us to add notes during our class discussion. I have added several URL’s below to help you. Here is a great web game to help with this task as well. Click here to link you to your HW review sheets for this material.

10 Osmosis and Diffusion Describe the process of diffusion of molecules into and out of the cell.

11 Student Notes Define the following words in your notebook and use them correctly in a paragraph describing the movement of water in the cells in the potato. Osmosis Diffusion Semi-permeable membrane Solute Solvent

12 Hypotonic, hypertonic and Isotonic
After watching the video and based on our work in the potato lab, you should be able to; Describe the process of osmosis and diffusion in a cell. You should be able to describe and define the concept of isotonic, hypertonic and hypotonic conditions. Create a drawing of 3 conditions during the potato lab that demonstrate these words in action.

13 Plasma Membrane The primary function of the plasma membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings. Composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, the plasma membrane is selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules and regulates the movement of substances in and out of cells.

15 Another View

16 Notes for the membrane video
Copy a picture of the plasma membrane into your notebook. Make sure you include an explanation of what a phospholipid is and what role it plays in making the membrane semi-permeable. (see the notes page on my web site for our class notes picture of the membrane.)

17 Plasma Membrane Explained https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moPJkCbKjBs

18 Passive vs Active Transport https://www. youtube. com/watch
Compare and contrast active vs passive transport across the cell membrane. Go to this web site to help you complete the task. The video provided will help you as well. Make a chart to help with the comparison. An example is provided on the next page.

19 Types of Transport Passive Active How does it work?
What does each need to do the job? Include the types of proteins that do the work Provide examples of each type of transport
