1 Leading from the Inside Out

2 Why lead from the inside out?
Organisations across the globe are finding that the realities of our times are calling us to take ever more conscious leadership – of ourselves, of our teams, of our distributed workforce, of our organisations. Yet it isn't the taking of leadership itself that is important, it is in how we lead that we make the difference.

3 So, what can support us as leaders in moments,
in interactions of high change & fluidity? Personal Leadership LLC is an approach of 2 interrelated principles & 6 practices that help us stay connected to inspiration even in the face of the new, unfamiliar, ambiguous, & unexpected. 4 Something’s up! The “Critical Moment Dialogue”
of Personal Leadership method CMD, the core process technology of Personal Leadership method, gives us a reflective tool to use in those “Something’s Up/ trigger moments in the midst of high change, fluidity. Teachable, learnable moments that often slip past us. Get lost in excess stress or lost in a yearning for stability. 5 Core themes of Personal Leadership
Leading from the inside out Disentangling internal experience from external circumstance Using difference of context, people, culture, as a resource Choosing our internal state of being Committing to applied competence “Leadership is, at root, about understanding and managing our own internal experience.” Schaetti, Watanabe, Ramsey

6 Based on Two Principles: Creativity
CREATIVITY = the uprising of life energy from deep within. When we accept ourselves as the creators of whatever it is we are experiencing, we have choice as to how to respond to it. 2 principles: Creativity- used to be used reserved for people in creative arts/ creatives. Changed in popular culture as understand that everything we do can become a creative act. CREATIVITY is uprising of life energy from deep within. Source of inspiration and insight. Is palpable, is kinesthetic. A physical vibration of alignment. When we accept ourselves as the creators of whatever it is we are experiencing, we hav choice as to how to respond to it. Not a victim. MINDFULNESS- Circulates throughout our entire body’s inner network. Intricate interplay btn thoughts, emotions, sensations, chemicals, heart rhythms. Daniel Goleman “a precise non-reactive awareness”. Purpose is to free us from powerful self-defeating emotional habits. © 2014 Personal Leadership Seminars © Personal Leadership Seminars <#> 6

8 The “Critical Moment Dialogue” Is based on Six Practices
Habit = unconscious practice Practice = conscious habit © 2014 Personal Leadership Seminars

9 Six Practices of Personal Leadership
Aligning with Vision Attending to Judgement Attending to Emotion Engaging Ambiguity Cultivating Stillness Attending to Physical Sensation © 2014 Personal Leadership Seminars © Personal Leadership Seminars <#> 9

10 Sensory Input Practices
Refer to the way we interact with the world Attending to Judgement Attending to Emotion Attending to Physical Sensation © 2014 Personal Leadership Seminars © Personal Leadership Seminars <#> 10

11 Container Practices Hold us, sustain us while we attend to judgements,
emotions, physical sensations Aligning with Vision Engaging Ambiguity Other 3 practices are what are called “container” practices. Why? Because they almost palpably /literally hold us, sustain us, as we attend to judgements, emotions and physical sensations. Cultivating Stillness © 2014 Personal Leadership Seminars © Personal Leadership Seminars <#> 11

12 Discerning Right Action What have I learned from this reflection?
The Critical Moment Dialogue Attending to Judgement What are my positive and negative judgments about myself, others, and the situation? What am I assuming? Aligning with Vision How does my experience align or not with my vision? How can I strengthen that alignment? Engaging Ambiguity What do I not know? What more can I not know? Attending to Emotion What are the positive and negative emotions I am having, and why do I care so much? “If I don’t know what I’m doing, I can’t do something else.” Feldenkrais Cultivating Stillness As I take a breath, what insights come? Attending to Physical Sensation What are my physical sensations and what are they trying to tell me? Discerning Right Action What, if anything, is the right thing for me to do or say? What have I learned from this reflection? © 2014 Personal Leadership Seminars © Personal Leadership Seminars <#> 12
