4. Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536), Divorced
Married to: Arthur , Henry VIII
Following Arthur’s death, Catherine of Aragon was betrothed to his brother Henry VIII.
The marriage was delayed from 1502 until 1509 due to Henry’s age and clashes between England and Spain about the payment of her dowry.
Served as regent and oversaw battles with the Scots while Henry was waging war with France.
Henry divorced her, so he could pursue his new love, Anne Boleyn.
Catherine of Aragon refused to agree to their separation. Even when Henry had the marriage annulled, Catherine still kept the mindset that she was still queen and refused her crown jewels to Anne Boleyn when asked for them.
She died in Kimbolton Castle in Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, England, on January 7,

Unlike Catherine of Aragon, she was enraged by her husband’s promiscuity.
Anne was detained and executed on charges of incest, witchcraft, adultery, and conspiracy against the king in 1536.

Henry kept his relationship with her private and she was content with this.
When Anne Boleyn was executed, Jane and the king’s relationship was more public.
Her motto was “Bound to Obey and Serve”

Jane gave birth to Prince Edward in 1537 and died shortly after.

She was 24 (half Henry VIII’s age) when they got married.
Henry pursued her maid of honor, Catherine Howard.
Henry referred to her as a “Flanders Mare” because he did not find her the least bit attractive.
Henry wanted to end the marriage for political and personal reasons:
Tension between the Duke of Cleves and the Empire was heading towards war and Henry did not want involved.
He had become more attracted to Catherine Howard.
Anne of Cleves did not object the the marriage annulment and said that the marriage had not yet been consummated and that her previous engagement to the son of the Duke of Lorraine had not been properly broken.
She was then referred to as the “King’s Sister” and was given Hever Castle.

Catherine was Anne Boleyn’s first cousin
She was about 19 when she married Henry and he was about 49.
She was a very lively, silly girl and lifted Henry’s mood.
Henry called her his “rose without a thorn” and “the very jewel of womanhood” and lavished gifts on her.
Then…
The rumors of infidelity began. She had one of her admirers appointed as her personal secretary.
She was very flirtatious and of no surprise, was arrested for adultery and executed in 1542.

Twice widowed before she wed Henry and was also in love with Thomas Seymour, brother of Henry’s 3rd wife, Jane Seymour.
Catherine bowed to his demands with grace.
Her mother, Maud Green, named her after Henry’s first love, Catherine of Aragon.
She was an admirable wife to Henry and a loving stepmother to his two youngest children, Elizabeth and Edward.
Upon Henry’s death, she wasted no time marrying Thomas Seymour, the only husband of hers that she had chosen herself.
